Later, a lion escaped from its cage and terrorized the city. However, a fearless young man named Mavrud (now the name of a wine grape) confronted and slew the lion. The king summoned Mavrud's mother to learn the source of such courage. She said she had secretly saved a vine, made wine, and that this was the source of Mavrud's bravery. Khan Krum ordered the vineyards replanted.<ref>{{citation|last=Kay |first=Annie |title=Bulgaria: The Bradt Travel Guide |publisher=Bradt Travel Guides |year=2008 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=1HgYB6dFSTwC&pg=PA226 |page=226|isbn=9781841621555 }}</ref><ref name=siskova>{{citation|last=Šiškova|first=Elena |last2=Ivanova |first2=Marii︠a︡ |last3=Dimova |first3=Rosit︠s︡a |title=Destination: Bulgaria |publisher=Selekta |year=1998 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=1HgYB6dFSTwC&pg=PA226 |page=87|isbn=9781841621555 }}</ref>
