Two game modes can be played, the first is Arcade Mode and entails surviving for as long as possible against an onslaught of zombies, this mode has been compared to ''[[Robotron: 2084]]''. In the Story Mode, the player must scavenge for supplies, eat due to hunger and sleep to prevent fatigue, as well as improve skills to increase the chances of continued survival.<ref name="ptt">{{cite web| url = http://playthisthing.com/survival-crisis-z| title = Survival Crisis Z|author1=Dugan, Patrick |author2=de Meijer, Robert | publisher = [[Manifesto Games|Play This Thing]]| date = 2008-07-14| accessdate = 2009-02-09}}</ref> In addition to the zombie horde, two factions are present on the city streets; the Rebels and SWAT. The zombies function as the antagonists of the game, and while they are dangerous at night they can be used to attack faction members if they are lured to the zombies' locations. Three episodes are available in Story Mode with different missions and more enemies. The player advances the plot by taking missions or work from faction leaders. TheIn work missions, the player can take over houses, look for secret dungeons, eliminate rival houses with C4 or simply roam the map looking for items and weapons to trade; as long as they watch out for threats from the post-apocalyptic world—living or dead. In missions the player performs special tasks like saving a scientist who is researching a cure.
The player must scavenge for supplies. Food is an especially important resource, due to the hunger and fatigue systems. The player can also take control of a house, often by force. The players can join three factions: the Rebels, SWAT, or the player can simply remain neutral. The zombies, while not a faction the player can join, function as the antagonists of the game. While dangerous at night, the player can also use zombies to his advantage, by luring NPCs into traps.

==Storyline==

According to the ReadMe text document that comes with the game, you play as a character who has witnessed the cause of the zombies, or "infected," first hand. A rabid dog who was infected transmitted the disease to a mailman, who in turn bit the owner of the dog. After the incident many others were bit, changing them into zombies. Soon the zombies outnumbered the humans. Due to the chaos caused by the zombies and the dwindling amount of resources, people began to fight amongst each other, specifically the SWAT and the rebels.

When your character finally decides to step out of his or her house, it has already been weeks since the first infection. The city is in ruins: Dilapidated houses, broken windows, and rotten corpses are everywhere. With hopes of survival, you step out into the streets.
