Tieria Erde (ティエリア・アーデ, Tieria Āde) is a fictional character in the Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam 00. He is the pilot of the GN-005 Gundam Virtue and the GN-004 Gundam Nadleeh, later GN-008 Seravee Gundam. He shares his DNA with Regene Regetta, and is of the same kind as the Innovators. Tieria is voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya, who won the "Best Actor in supporting role" award at the 2008 Seiyu Awards for this performance.

Name

The codename Tieria Erde is close to the words in Spanish "Tierra Verde", meaning "Green Earth", but Erde also means Earth in German. Whether the name Tieria Erde is the real name of the Gundam Meister is unknown, as very little is known about Tieria. However, considering that most of the Gundam Meisters are constantly referred to with their codenames, with their real names a Level 7 secret, it is likely the name "Tieria Erde" is also a codename.

His first name may also be a derivative from Tiresias (also transliterated as Teiresias Τειρεσίας), a Greek blind prophet who was forced by the Olympian gods to live his/her life as both a man and a woman to find out which gender got the most out of sex, a derivation explained by his bishounen appearance.

Personality

Initially cold, strict and emotionless. He takes on the role of a law enforcer of sorts, with no regard for the lives or feelings of his fellow comrades in the name of the grander scheme of things. He comes off as rather stoic and distant, although also proud and arrogant. To this end, he often clashes verbally with the other Gundam Meisters, as well as his "superior", Sumeragi Lee Noriega, on topics ranging from insubordination to ideology. He even goes so far as to pull a gun on Setsuna after he nearly revealed his identity to an enemy combatant and prepare to dispatch Allelujah when he is initially captured by the Human Reform League.[2][3]Tieria is often noted for being on an extremely high horse, looking down upon others. The link between Tieria and Veda can explain Tieria's holier-than-thou attitude, and his belief that he is a judge of the members of Celestial Being. Tieria is shown to also be rather intelligent, and capable of making competent snap decisions.

After being disconnected from Veda and forming an unlikely bond with fellow Gundam Meister Lockon Stratos near the end of the first season, he begins to develop a more "human" personality and starts to feel more compassion for other people, going so far as to lock Lockon in a room to prevent him from fighting in order to "save" him. When Lockon dies, Tieria's initial reaction is that of rage, which he directs toward Setsuna; however, he begins to find strength in himself, and promises to fight on in the name of his fallen comrade.

Tieria has gradually mellowed out into a much less harsh character during the four-year time skip, modelling himself after the late Neil Dylandy; however, he still retains his trademark strictness and does not hesitate to chastise others when the occasion arises, though this occur less frequently than season 1. Notably, he is one of the only members of Celestial Being who does not think of Lyle Dylandy as a replica of his late brother, an interesting contrast from a view shared by members such as Feldt Grace. He is shown as being more friendly and helpful towards his comrades, and even seems to have developed a wry sense of humour.

Tieria's Past

Compared to the rest of the Gundam Meisters, Tieria is the most enigmatic, with much of his past unexplained.[4] So far, his life and history before Celestial Being's public string of armed interventions is unknown. In the second season, it is shown that Tieria shares the same DNA with a person known as Regene Regetta, and that he is of the same kind as the Innovators. The reason to his no change in appearance during the four years time skip is that his body is controlled by nano technology to suppress aging due to genetic enhancements, therefore he is an artificial human rather than an android as previously supposed. Ribbons also claims that the sole purpose of Tieria's existence is to faithfully carry out the plans of Aeolia Schenberg. According to Regene Tieria's past maybe unknown even to himself, as he was unable to access Veda's level 7 information which contains the past information on all Celestial being members possible meaning that Tieria may not be allowed to learn who or what he truly is.

History

First Season

At the start of the series, Tieria has an extremely rocky relationship with Setsuna F Seiei; the former does not understand why the latter was chosen by Veda as a Gundam Meister, and believes Setsuna's brash actions and random insubordination will breach the code of secrecy of Celestial Being (In episode 7, he tells Setsuna he will shoot him down if he does the same thing as he did during his battle in PMC of Moralia) and doesn't care much for his comrades life as he nearly shot Allelujah if not for the battle with the HRL forces. However, he eventually finds a more common ground with Setsuna in their vehement dislike of Team Trinity, even going so far as to back him up when he decides to combat them; this unexpected move, along with the teamwork strategies used in the battle, surprises the rest of Celestial Being.

Recently, cracks in Tieria's cold exterior have become prominent, showing a softer and more vulnerable side that contrasts greatly with the emotionless and superior Meister he seemed to be. After Lockon Stratos is injured protecting him from an enemy attack, Tieria displays a great amount of guilt and remorse. He angrily blames himself for Lockon's injury, even going so far as to call himself unfit to be a Gundam Meister. Lockon comforts him, yet afterwards when Tieria regains his composure he reverts to his old habit of snapping at his comrades.

When UN Army forces attacked the Meisters, Tieria locked Lockon in his room to prevent him from entering the battle, saying to Allelujah that he will protect Lockon as he saved him. He becomes increasingly concerned when Lockon manages to join the fight, and later when he disappears chasing Ali Al-Saachez. Just like the others, he is seen crying when they realize Lockon has been killed.

Following the return of the three remaining Meisters to the Ptolemaios, Tieria takes his emotions out on Setsuna, blaming his being "slow" as the reason for Lockon's death. Seeing this, Sumeragi breaks up the fight by promptly slapping Tieria across the face. Shortly afterwards, as Nadleeh is being repaired, he vows to Allelujah that he will fight back for Lockon's sake, despite the former's warning.

Soon after entering battle with the force of GN-X units plus Alejandro Corner's mobile armour, Alvatore, Tieria activates Nadleeh's Trans-Am system; however, he soon loses a limb and the Trans-Am is deactivated, leaving him vulnerable to the two GN-X units that attack him, one of them being piloted by Patrick Colasour. The two fire at each other simultaneously; while Tieria's shot destroys the GN-X and disables Patrick, Nadleeh is reduced to a mere torso.

Tieria is last seen in the cockpit of the Nadleeh, struggling to eject his GN Drive before losing consciousness, saying he is "going to where Lockon is". In the PS2 game Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Gundam Meisters, the mourning Tieria is shown visiting the Dylandy grave three years after Lockon's death, with Lyle watching him from behind a tree. The anime ending sequence also references this, as Tieria is shown walking away from a tombstone adorned with a Celtic cross, a reference to Lockon's Irish background.

Second Season

Unlike the other Gundam Meisters who were either KIA or MIA Tieria has been with Celestial Being preparing for the future and the fight against the A-Laws. During the battle between the GN-001 Gundam Exia and the GNX-704T Ahead at the "Proud" colony he saves Setsuna from being killed by the GNX-609T GN-XIII in his new GN-008 Seravee Gundam and destroys the unit. He then escorts Setsuna and Saji Crossroad to the Plotemaios II.

The turning point in series for Tieria is where meets he meets his identical look-alike Regene Regetta revealing that they share the same DNA of Base Sequence Pattern-0988. Regene tells Tieria that he and the Innovators are working to complete Aeolia's Plan and that he and Celestial Being are now a hindrance to the plan. Regene leaves Tieria with an offer to join the Innovators.

Tieria is troubled by what to do to bring the world peace, when Wang Liu Mei announces the A-Laws are having a party he decides to investigate in a female disguise with Setsuna as his driver. He then meets Ribbons Almark and learns that he was the one who gave the Earth Sphere Federation its False GN-Drives as well caused the certain events that have happened to Celestial Being. He then decides to follow his own path rather than Ribbons' plan, to which Ribbons laughs and insults him. An enraged Tieria attempts to shoot Ribbons but is saved by Healing Care.

Though reluctant to tell the others about the Innovators he eventually tells them about the Innovators after witnessing the Memento Mori orbital weapon destroying Suihr Kingdom, and informs his comrades that they are the force that are controlling the A-Laws movements. As he is about to tell the others that he is the same as the Innovators he is interrupted by Sumeragi Lee Noriega, who says it does not matter because he is their comrade.

Tieria later assist in destroying the Memento Mori Orbital Weapon with the help of Lockon Stratos. In the aftermath of the battle, the Ptolemaios is ambushed and forced to land on Earth after suffering serious damage. With Revive Revival and Bring Stability closing on their position, Allelujah takes on Revive while Tieria faces off with Bring. Though Tieria's Seravee is clearly outmatched by Bring's Garazzo, Tieria manages to turn the tables when he uses Seravee to physically hold the Garazzo and reveals the Seraphim Gundam hidden on the back of Seravee. Tieria then declares that unlike the Innovators' belief that he is an Innovator, he is actually a human being just before he finishes Bring off with a point-blank blast from Seraphim's GN cannons, shocking both Revive and Ribbons.

Veda

Tieria has the ability to directly interface with Celestial Being's supercomputer, Veda. When this happens, Tieria's eyes glow with a rainbow-ish, digital hue that signifies a successful connection. The first time Tieria displayed such an ability was when Choubu, the Human Reform League's anti-Gundam squad, attempted to capture GN-005 Gundam Virtue. Tieria activated GN-004 Gundam Nadleeh, hidden under Virtue's armor, by interfacing directly with his Gundam's computer. This ability is later elaborated upon when Tieria interfaces directly with a Veda terminal on board the Ptolemaios. This allows Tieria to access anything uploaded to Veda, from information to live video feeds from cameras connected to Veda.

Tieria can also access the "TRIAL" system on Nadleeh through this method. The TRIAL system permits him to control all Gundams connected to Veda, and is an ability only Tieria has. Tieria first activated this system when fighting Team Trinity, which Tieria used to shut down both Throne Eins and Throne Drei, declaring that neither Johann nor Nena Trinity were suited to be Gundam Meisters, and were sentenced to death on his judgment[5]. However, it would seem that, Veda has been compromised by internal elements, which questioned when Tieria found himself unable to access Level 7 information in Veda, while Team Trinity seemed to have access to information in Veda. It is confirmed in Episode 20 that VEDA has in fact been compromised, by Ribbons Almark, who has the same ability to directly interface with computers. In episode 22, Feldt Grace notes that this ability is not one that humans would be able to perform.

The ability to hack into Veda may explain Tieria's proud attitude; however, he has lost this connection. During the attack of the GN-X units, when the Gundams' power supply is switched to the Ptolemaios' external backup system implemented by Sumeragi, he still attempts to interface with Veda, leading to the immobility of Virtue. Patrick Colasour takes advantage of this and charges at Virtue with a beam saber; however, Lockon uses Dynames as a shield in the nick of time and takes the full blow. Later on, Tieria is shown to be concerned that Celestial Being would not be able to complete their mission due to the hacking of Veda.

In the second season, it is revealed that due to quantum brainwaves and GN particles, Tieria and other characters within the series are given the ability to link with Veda and a telepathic ability. Later on, Ribbons Almark tries to tempt Tieria into joining the Innovators by offering him full access of Veda; however, likely due to the influences of those he has interacted with, especially Neil Dylandy, Tieria declines the offer and instead resolves to follow what he believes in.
