Richard Jones or John Richardson or someone else?

edit

The article says:

Early resident Richard Jones, later the first Brisbane Member in the New South Wales Parliament, acquired 93 acres in 1847, and called it "New Farm".

This surprised me a bit as I thought it was the "new farm" established by the convict settlement after their first one in the area of the now City Botanic Gardens. Certainly the Queensland Place Names entry for New Farm agrees with me that it was a convict farm but disagrees with me on the location of the original farm (although that detail isn't necessary for the purposes of discussing New Farm).

There was indeed a NSW politician by that name in that time frame, that is, Richard Jones (1816–1892) but he was not the member for Electoral district of Brisbane (New South Wales) and indeed his article makes no mention of him living anywhere in what we now call Queensland; he appears to live in Maitland.

Brisbane was a short-lived electorate having only one member, John Richardson (New South Wales politician), who did live in Queensland but I cannot find any connection between him and New Farm.

The Moreton Bay Courier was published from 1846 and it contains its first mention of New Farm on 20 June 1846, so it seems unlikly that the naming of New Farm was linked to the purchase of land in 1847.

Should I remove this sentence which appears to make no sense? Kerry (talk) 07:12, 24 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
