Glyph origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) : semantic 門 (“door”) + phonetic 西. Compare 𨳊, 𨳍, 𨶙.
Etymology
Perhaps a substrate loan. Compare Proto-Tai *hiːᴬ (“vagina”), whence Thai หี (hǐi).
Alternatively, Bauer (1991) proposes that it is related to 屄: *mai > *bai (cf. Min Nan 膣屄 tsi1 bai1) > *phai (cf. Chengdu phi1) > *hai. Also compare Tibeto-Burman words: Tangkhul Naga hai (“vulva”), Mru [script needed] (kai, “vagina; vulva”), Bodo (India) [script needed] (ki ʈuʔ, “vagina”).
