  1. A Thai vowel letter traditionally named ไม้หน้า (máai-nâa). It can be informally called สระเอ (sà-rà-ee).

Usage notes

When it is solely used with a consonant, it produces /eː/. It is also used as a vowel component to produce other sounds as follows:

  • เ◌ะ becomes /eʔ/, without a final consonant.
  • เ◌็ becomes /e/, with a final consonant.
  • แ◌ becomes /ɛː/. There is the complete glyph for convenient typing.
  • แ◌ะ becomes /ɛʔ/, without a final consonant.
  • แ◌็ becomes /ɛ/, with a final consonant.
  • เ◌าะ becomes /ɔʔ/.
  • เ◌อ becomes /ɤː/.
  • เ◌ย becomes /ɤːj/.
  • เ◌อะ becomes /ɤʔ/, without a final consonant.
  • เ◌ิ becomes /ɤː/, or sometimes /ɤ/, with a final consonant.
  • เ◌ีย becomes /ia̯/.
  • เ◌ียะ becomes /ia̯ʔ/.
  • เ◌ือ becomes /ɯa̯/.
