Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewd- (“to throw, shoot, pursue, rush”), whence *skeutaną (“to shoot”); cognate with Proto-Slavic *kỳdati (“to fling”), Sanskrit चोदति (códati, “to impel”). The semantic development would be “to shoot out” > “to jut out” > “projection, edge”.
