carall
Catalan
editEtymology
editUncertain. Coromines proposes a derivation from Latin *cārāculum from the rare verb cārō (“to card [wool]”). An alternative favoured by Moll and Meyer-Lübke is a derivation from Latin *characulum, a diminutive of Ancient Greek χάραξ (khárax, “pole”). Cognate with Spanish carajo, Galician carallo and Portuguese caralho.
