Perhaps a native word, but the way it was created is uncertain. It may have the same root as the verb kerül. It is also possible that it originated from the same root with the noun-forming suffix -t.[1] See also: kerít and kerítés.
Alternatively, a Wanderwort related to Ossetian кӕрт (kært); see it for more.
