scipio
Latin
editEtymology
editOf uncertain origin. De Vaan tentatively derives the word from Proto-Italic *skeip-, from a Proto-Indo-European *sḱeip-o-, and connects the word to cippus and Sanskrit शेप (śepa, “penis”).[1] Others derive the word from Proto-Indo-European *skap-, and connect the word to scāpus, scōpa, scopiō, Ancient Greek σκήπτω (skḗptō), English shaft (in addition to cippus, though not शेप (śepa)).
