Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan popularly known as Salman Khan (Devanāgarī: सलमान ख़ान, born December 27, 1965) is a Bollywood movie star.
Early life
Salman was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, into an Indian Muslim family with strong ties to the film industry. His father Salim Khan is a successful screenplay writer. One of Salim Khan's wives (he has two, the first being Salma Khan) is the famous dancer Helen. Salman Khan is son of Salma Khan. Salman's brothers Sohail Khan and Arbaaz Khan are also actors, if not as successful as Salman. Salman has two younger sisters (Alvira and Arpita), one married to actor Atul Agnihotri.
Career
He rose to fame with the surprise hit film Maine Pyar Kiya and followed up with successful films such as Saajan, Andaz Apna Apna, and Hum Aapke Hain Koun. He has made a name for himself with soft-spoken romantic roles and later on playing the comic-boy lover to perfection. After almost twenty years in the industry, he is still regarded as one of the top actors in Bollywood. People still say that the industry is ruled by the so-called "three Khans": Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan.
Salman's life of late has been marred by a series of legal and relationship troubles.
Legal troubles
Vehicular
- September 28, 2002, Salman was arrested for drunk driving and vehicular homicide. He lost control of his Toyota Landcruiser and ran over some people who had been sleeping on a Mumbai sidewalk. One was killed and three were injured.
Hunting endangered species
- On February 17, 2006, Salman was sentenced to one year in prison for hunting an endangered species, the Chinkara but the sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal.
- On April 10, 2006, Salman was handed a five year jail term for hunting the endangered Chinkara. He was remanded to Jodhpur jail, and remained there until April 13, when he was granted bail. [1]
Relationship troubles
- His turbulent relationship with Aishwarya Rai filled gossip columns.
- Later, he was accused of forcing Ms. Rai, then his ex-girlfriend, to appear at several events sponsored by the Mumbai underworld, threatening her and boasting of his connections to organized crime. The "evidence" was a tape of a mobile phone call, later said to be a fake.
