On December 14, 2012, 27 people, including 20 children, were killed in a mass shooting in the Sandy Hook village of Newtown, Connecticut. 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, before the gunman, identified as Adam Lanza, 20,[3] fatally shot himself. Prior to the shooting, he also allegedly killed his mother.abc Three other children were transported to hospitals in critical condition, where two died of their injuries. Lanza's girlfriend has also been reported missing in New Jersey.[4] Lanza's older brother Ryan was being questioned by the Connecticut State Police and FBI, although he was not being called a suspect.[5] It was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.[6]

    Shooting

Authorities have recovered two 9mm handguns from the scene: one a Glock and one a SIG Sauer.[7][1] A .223 caliber rifle manufactured by Bushmaster Firearms International was found in the back of a car in the parking lot, but was not used at the school.[1] The guns were owned by and legally registered to the suspect's mother.[8] The gunman wore black military gear and died by suicide.[9][10]

The classroom where the shooter's mother worked as a kindergarten teacher was the scene of the majority of the casualties.[11] The mother was among those confirmed dead.[12] The principal and school psychologist were among the dead.[13]

    Suspect

There has been no official release of the shooter's name, although unnamed police authorities identified the gunman as Adam Lanza, age 20.[3] Other unnamed police sources initially reported the wrong name, giving Adam's older brother's name, Ryan Lanza, age 24, by mistake.[14] Ryan Lanza has been taken into custody by police for questioning, according to unnamed police sources.[12] The suspect's father, a vice president of taxes for GE Energy Financial Services and adjunct professor at Northeastern University in Boston who lives in Stamford, Connecticut, declined to comment on the shootings.[15]

    Reactions

    U.S. politicians

According to the White House spokesman Jay Carney, President Obama expressed "enormous sympathy for families that are affected".[16] President Obama gave a televised address at approximately 3:17 p.m. ET the same day, saying, "We are going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."[17] He also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the White House in respect for the victims.[18]

Democratic Congressman Jerrold Nadler of New York called for more talk about stricter gun laws, saying "If now is not the time to have a serious discussion about gun control and the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our society, I don't know when is." Nadler also stated: "I am challenging President Obama, the Congress and the American public to act on our outrage and, finally, do something about this."[19]

United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan released the following statement: "School shootings are always incomprehensible and horrific tragedies. But words fail to describe today's heartbreaking and savage attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School. As the father of two children in elementary school, I can barely imagine the anguish and losses suffered today by the Newtown community. Our hearts and prayers go out to every parent, child, teacher, staff member, and administrator at Sandy Hook and the surrounding community. And our thanks go out to every teacher, staff member, and first responder who cared for, comforted, and protected children from harm, often at risk to themselves. We will do everything in our power to assist and support the healing and recovery of Newtown."[20]

    Foreign heads of government

    • Australia Julia Gillard, the Prime Minister of Australia, published a press release, stating that the Australian people "share America’s shock at this senseless and incomprehensible act of evil. As parents and grandparents, as brothers and sisters, as friends of the American people, we mourn the loss of children, aged only five to ten years, whose futures lay before them. We mourn the loss of brave teachers who sought only to lead their students into that future but were brutally murdered in a place of refuge and learning".[24]
