Star Trek: Lower Decks is an upcoming American adult animated web television series, created for CBS All Access by Mike McMahan as part of an expansion of the Star Trek franchise headed by executive producer Alex Kurtzman. It is the first animated series created for All Access, and follows the support crew of one of Starfleet's least important starships.

Kurtzman's expansion included potential animated series when it began in June 2018, and McMahan was brought on by that October when the series was officially ordered for two seasons. Animation work had begun by the following February.

The first 10-episode season of Star Trek: Lower Decks is expected to be released in 2020.[1]

Premise

Star Trek: Lower Decks focuses on "the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships" in 2380 (a year after Star Trek: Nemesis).[2][3]

Development

In June 2018, after becoming sole showrunner of the series Star Trek: Discovery, Alex Kurtzman signed a five-year overall deal with CBS Television Studios to expand the Star Trek franchise beyond Discovery to several new series, miniseries, and animated series.[4] While developing one of the animated series, Aaron Baiers of Kurtzman's Secret Hideout brought Mike McMahan, the head writer of popular animated comedy Rick and Morty, to the production. Kurtzman was won over by McMahan's love of Star Trek and his pitch of a series following "the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end." The series was marketed to different platforms and networks, before being picked-up by CBS All Access, the streaming service that releases Discovery.[2]

On October 25, All Access officially ordered two seasons of the animated series, titled Star Trek: Lower Decks. McMahan was set to create, write, and executive produce the series alongside Kurtzman, Secret Hideout's Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry (the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry) and Trevor Roth of Roddenberry Entertainment, and veteran animation executive turned producer Katie Krentz. It is the first animated series created for All Access, and the first animated Star Trek series since the 1973–74 series Star Trek: The Animated Series.[2] In January 2019, Kurtzman said the series would not be "Rick and Morty in the world of Star Trek" and would have its own tone, but would "skew slightly more adult". He added that the intention of the comedy was to have the audience "laugh with Star Trek and not at Star Trek."[5] That March, Kurtzman said the series would be released once animation work was completed for it, which he expected would be in 2021 or 2022.[6]

Animation

Work on the animation for the series had begun by the end of February 2019,[7] and Kurtzman expected it would take around a year for this to be completed for the series.[6]

Release

The series is expected to premiere in 2020 on CBS All Access in the United States.[6][2][1]
