Photo for infobox
The Wikimedia Commons category c:Category:Masha Gessen at present holds two photos: one from 2011 and the one in the infobox now, from 2015. An objection was raised on the WP Humanities reference desk regarding the subject's "miserable" appearance in the 2015 photo. <s>My solution is to add </s> The earlier photo already appears lower on the page; both are dated. I suggest it's not adequately justifiable to swap the photos having the earlier one in the infobox due to a subjective assessment of "appearance".-- Deborahjay (talk) 15:37, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Recent edit summaries from an editor using an IP address say that the editor is Gessen's daughter. I reverted the edits but I figure it is worth a discussion. Knope7 (talk) 02:43, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

Hello - Masha Gessen here. I appreciate the reason for removing the changes. However, my daughter was correcting a factual mistake. My legal name, since 1989, is Masha Gessen. The way the article is currently titled is misleading and has caused a fair amount of inconvenience for me. Please retitle it "Masha Gessen." It would be accurate to say that I was born "Maria Alexandrovna," but not more than that. Thank you <!-- Template:Unsigned IP --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.1.244.6 (talk) 10:51, 26 November 2018 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
:I've gone ahead and changed it because that doesn't seem controversial to me (and because of policy), and I can only find one reliable source that refers to you as Maria Alexandrovna (this one, but only the introduction is not behind a paywall). But it would be really great if you could confirm this outside of Wikipedia because, for what I imagine are obvious reasons, trusting an anonymous person on the internet claiming to be Masha Gessen isn't the best way to go. Two possible ways you can do this are by Twitter or by contacting Wikimedia. You can check out WP:BLPSELF for more info. == Bibliography ==

I have commenced a tidy-up of the Bibliography section using cite templates. Capitalization and punctuation follow standard cataloguing rules in AACR2 and RDA, as much as Wikipedia templates allow it. ISBNs and other persistent identifiers, where available, are commented out, but still available for reference. This is a work in progress; feel free to continue. I don't see this one yet in the awards section:

No Censorship on the Talk Page Please
People have a right to express their opinions on the talk page. Deleting opinions you don't like does nothing to improve the encyclopedia. <!-- Template:Unsigned IP --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.38.185.65 (talk) 23:47, 26 January 2021 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->
After some discussions on a German article in spiegel.de I checked this page to find out what pronouns Gessen prefers. It is stated Gessen uses "they/their" – but the rest of the article nevertheless uses "she". What is the standard with nonbinary persons who prefer to use a nonbinary pronoun? Shouldn’t it be the chosen pronoun to describe Gessen? <!-- Template:Unsigned IP --><small class="autosigned">—&nbsp;Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.202.55.138 (talk) 12:55, 17 May 2023 (UTC)</small> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Using the politicized language of transgender activists to refer to a transgender person is not appropriate for an encyclopedia, which should be as objective as possible. Transgender terminology has not been accepted by a wide enough swath of the population (in any country) for it to become any kind of new standard, especially when that involves referring to an individual in the plural. Transgender people who feel themselves to have qualities of both genders should be referred to as their birth gender. Since she was born "Maria", I assume that to be female -- so "she/her" would be appropriate, especially since she looks and acts like a woman.

Should we mention this in the article? In May 2023 Masha Gesse resigned from the PEN America board following the cancellation of a Russian writers' panel at the 2023 PEN World Voices Festival after Ukrainian writers threatened to boycott. (This was the comment that was censored that I refer to directly above.)

:The relevant guidelines on how to refer to trans people is WP:GENDERID and MOS:DEADNAME; the article does well already in following them. Also per WP:NOTFORUM comments on the talk page that are only personal arguments instead of based on reliable sources can be removed. Your guesses as to what pronouns are most appropriate would fall under that category. Rab V (talk) 02:29, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

In the section "Return to the U.S.," neither of the referenced articles/interviews on the CBC can be found at the links, which revert to the general CBC website. I could not find the interviews in a search of the website, nor on Internet Archive (Wayback Machine). I noted this for the first article, but could not do so for the second. This is beyond my pay grade. 11 Arlington (talk) 11 Arlington (talk) 01:09, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
::I didn't realize that the encyclopedia has a subtitle: "The Encyclopedia for Ultra-Liberal Progressives and Effete Intellectuals". Transgender terminology is based on theory, and theory isn't fact. So much for Wikipedia being an accurate source of information! Furthermore, it makes sense to remove unsourced comments from an article, but it makes no sense on the Talk page. "Talk" -- do you understand what that means? The Talk page is a place to discuss the evolution of an article, so it naturally involves the expression of opinions. Removing comments from a Talk page is just censorship by trans people of ideas that they feel threatened by.

:I've replaced the first with a mirror from Q YouTube channel. (Pro tip: Googling the citation title in quotes will often show you where it moved on the site in question. In this case, there's still a few pages on the CBC's website containing it in part, but the YouTube video appears most comprehensive.) I'm also drawing a blank on the second, although I'll note it's a 500 error, which may indicate a temporary error on the CBC site. Either way, I'm sure there's still a version of the January 9, 2014, episode of The Current hosted somewhere, but I don't have the time to go digging right now. <span style="font-family:courier"> -- <span style="color:#E6007A">Tamzin</span></span>&#91;<i style="color:#E6007A">cetacean needed</i>&#93; <small>(they&#124;xe)</small> 02:50, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
::Wikipedia has never lived up to its promise to be a source of unbiased information. Most editors have an agenda, and as such, most articles which are even slightly controversial contain biased information.

Pronouns in English wikipedia

[edit]

After some discussions on a German article in spiegel.de I checked this page to find out what pronouns Gessen prefers. It is stated Gessen uses "they/their" – but the rest of the article nevertheless uses "she". What is the standard with nonbinary persons who prefer to use a nonbinary pronoun?
