If a genus has only one species, then the species should be merged into the genus article. This avoids any duplication since, necessarily, any characteristics of the species are identical to the characteristics of the genus. In total, the following genera, as of ICTV's most recent release, have only one species. Completed mergers are struck. If a genus has an ''f'' next to, that means that the genus is the only genus in a family, so the genus should be merged into the family article. This creates a single article for the family, genus, and species instead of three separate articles that cover the same thing. If a genus has a ''t'' next to it, then there may be a proposed, tentative new member of the group not yet recognized by the ICTV that may deserve its own article, so a merger should likely not be performed. Some genera may be missing the ''t''. Also, given the importance and number of them, herpes, influenza, and papillomavirus genera will be dealt with last. Further down is a list of families that have one genus; same principle applies. |
