Naked and Afraid is an American reality television series that airs on the Discovery Channel and premiered on June 23, 2013.[1][2] Each episode chronicles the lives of two survivalists — a man and a woman — who meet for the first time and are given the task of surviving a stay in the wilderness naked for 21 days.[3][4] At the beginning of each challenge, survivalists are given a Primitive Survival Rating, or PSR, based off of their experience, skill, and mental approach; their PSR is reevaluated at the end of the 21 days.

"The Jungle Curse" places Shane Lewis, 40, and Kim Shelton, 22, in the Costa Rican rain forest. Prior to their arrival, the show's executive producer Steve Rankin was bitten by a fer-de-lance, or Bothrops asper, and was hospitalized. Shane began the show with a Primitive Survival Rating (PSR) of 7.6 and ended with an 8.4, Kim began with a 5.8 and ended with a 7.8. Kim lost a total of 26 pounds, Shane lost 45.

"Terror in Tanzania" landed E.J. Snyder, 46, and Kellie Nightlinger, 38, in the Tanzanian Serengeti together. E.J. began the show with a PSR of 7.3 and ended with an 8.2, Kellie began with a 7.5 and ended with an 8.1. Kellie lost a total of 28 pounds, E.J. lost 33. Although producers had to intervene on Day 16 and transport E.J. to a local medic, where his worsening foot infection was cleaned, drained, and dressed and he was administered antibiotics, he was able to continue the challenge and complete the 21 days.

"Island from Hell" drops Jonathan Klay, 36, and Alison Teal, 27, on a pair of islands in the Maldives. Jonathan began the show with a PSR of 6.9 and ended with a 7.2, Alison began with an 8.0 and ended with an 8.4. Alison lost a total of 14 pounds, Jonathan lost 18.

"Punishment in Panama" sends Clint Jivoin, 25, and Laura Zerra, 27, to Cayo de Agua (Cayo Agua Island), Panama. Clint began the show with a PSR of 6.9 and ended with a 7.3, Laura began with a 7.9 and ended with an 7.2. Laura lost a total of 17 pounds, Clint lost 40. In the beginning, Laura is plagued by chitras (sandfly) bites and experiences an allergic reaction all over her body; once they light a fire, she is able to use steamed noni leaves from the Morinda citrifolia, a medicinal plant, to relieve the serious swelling in her feet. Although the pair are unable to make a fire until a record 8th day, they arguably eat the most of any group, including water apples, coconuts, snails, sea urchin, lobster, and caiman.

Reception

Brian Lowery of Variety found the series to be, "typical of the genre, but it's still kind of a risible kick, if only for how seriously the show takes itself."[12] Melissa Camacho of Common Sense Media, and David Hinckley of the New York Daily News, gave the show 3 out of 5 stars.[13][14] Mike Hale of The New York Times expressed skepticism that the dangers implied by the situation faced by the couples in each episode were authentic, even by the standards of reality television, observing that the couple in the series premiere appeared to be cleaner and more shaved than he'd have expected. Hale also was not impressed with the interaction between the two participants, whose personalities he found uninteresting, stating that he found the snake bite suffered by the field producer shown in the beginning of the episode to be more riveting.[15]

Cast members

Jonathan Klay, co-star of the third episode titled "Island from Hell," had previous appeared on the television show Foursome, which was aired on the Playboy Channel, where he was depicted engaging in explicit sex acts. [1]
