Wesley Saïd (born 19 April 1995) is a French professional footballer who plays as a winger for Ligue 1 club Lens. He is a former France youth international, having represented his country from under-16 to under-21 level.
Club career
Rennes
During the 2012–13 Stade Rennais FC season, Wesley Saïd participated in several training sessions with the professional squad of Rennes, led by Frédéric Antonetti. Eventually, in early January 2013, he signed his first professional contract for three years with Stade Rennais Football Club, after lengthy negotiations with his formative club[1].[2] However, his contract wouldn't come into effect until June 2013[3],which meant the young striker had to bide his time before making his professional debut. Throughout the 2012-13 season, he continued to feature for the reserve team in the CFA2, where he had kicked off the 2011–12 Stade Rennais FC season and netted six goals in 16 matches[4].
In the summer of 2013, Philippe Montanier replaced Antonetti as the head coach of Stade Rennais FC, and Saïd participated in the pre-season preparations for the 2013–14 Stade Rennais FC season with the professional team. On 31 August 2013, he made his Ligue 1 debut against LOSC Lille, starting under Montanier's guidance and playing for over an hour before being substituted by Jonathan Pitroipa[5][6]. In total, he played nine matches, including six in Ligue 1, during the first half of the season, but he was no longer used by Montanier from January onwards, as the club had bolstered its attacking lineup with the arrivals of Ola Toivonen, Kamil Grosicki, and Paul-Georges Ntep during the winter transfer window. While Ntep left AJ Auxerre to join Rennes, Saïd was initially expected to move in the opposite direction[7], but it was eventually another young Rennes striker, Zana Allée, who was loaned to the Burgundy club. Saïd refused a loan move in order to compete in the Coupe Gambardella with his teammates[8], where he shone by scoring a hat-trick to eliminate Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16[9], before seeing his team eliminated in the quarterfinals by Stade de Reims[10]. He finished the season in CFA2, scoring five goals in 11 matches[4].
Dijon
In July 2017, Saïd signed a four-year contract with Dijon. The transfer fee paid to Rennes was reported as €1.5 million with a possible €500,000 more in bonuses and a 20% sell-on clause.[11][12]
Toulouse
On 3 August 2019, Toulouse announced the signing of Saïd on a four-year deal.[13]
Lens
On 22 June 2021, Saïd signed a four-year contract with Ligue 1 club Lens.[14] On 17 January 2023, he extended his contract with Lens until 2026.[15]
International career
Born in France to a Réunionnais father (of Comorian descent) and a Mauritian mother,[16][17] Saïd is a former France youth international.
