Welcome to WikiProject Food and Drink, a collaboration area and group of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of food and beverages. This page and its associated pages contain their suggestions, ideas and proposals; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians dedicated to the subject of foods and drinks.

New members are always welcome and appreciated.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink/header

WikiProject Food and Drink is one of the oldest WikiProjects on Wikipedia, beginning its life as the Gastronomy WikiProject in April 2003. Since that time, it has evolved into a comprehensive project covering numerous subjects and concentrations. However, it remains as an association of Wikipedians who share an interest in food and drink related matters who have come together to co-ordinate the development of these articles on Wikipedia.

  • If you would like to help or require assistance, please inquire on the talk page, check the "Ways to contribute" section on this page, or just dig in and start editing!

 What topics do we cover?

We cover a very broad array of subjects, from national cuisines to various food dishes and beverages. The amount of topics that fall under our umbrella is huge, with over 25,000 articles and counting that are grouped into numerous categories.

These are some of the topics that fall under our purview:

There is, of course, a great deal more that these few areas listed here.

 How are we organized?

We have organized activities within the project in several departments:

  • The assessment department and corresponding Assessment Task Force focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's Food and drink related articles.
  • The Welcome Squad is a group of WikiFoodies that has a two-fold purpose, to welcome new members of our project and to invite newly registered users to Wikipedia to join our project. They will use the templates designed for these purposes, {{FD Welcome}} and {{FD invitation}}.

 Project Goals

The project's goals are to build the foremost free-content encyclopedia of food and drink content in the English language by:

  1. Engaging in the creation, expansion, collaboration, maintenance of articles relating to the categories of food- and drink-related articles
  2. Providing developmental and structural guidelines and recommendations for editors of food- and drink-related articles
  3. Serving as the central point of discussion for all issues related to Food and Drink on Wikipedia
  4. Helping to maintain the various WP:Portals associated with this project and its sister projects.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink/header

Because of the large array of subjects related to Food & Drinks, we have divided the project into several related WikiProjects and associated sub-projects known as Task Forces have been created to focus on specific subjects within the field. Additionally, there are several other WikiProject that cover topics that closely related or directly overlap with ones we cover.

You can check out any of these projects by clicking on the links in the box to the right.

 Task forces

Under the umbrella of this project, several task forces were created to cover specific targeted focused subjects of the project in order to focus on developing, expanding, maintaining and improve those articles that cover to these smaller, more specific genres.

  • Beverages - This task force covers the drink side of the project. It is broken down into several working groups covering specific types of beverages.
    • Mixed drinks - Covers subjects related to cocktails and mixers.
    • Soft drinks - Covers subjects related to sodas, juices and other non-alcoholic drinks
    • Coffee and Tea - Covers subjects related to coffee and tea.
  • Herbs and Spices - Covers the vast array of the herbs and spices used every day.
  • Cheeses - The Cheeses Task Force covers the array of cheeses, cheese dishes and related topics.
  • Desserts - Covering all that is sweet, not just the stuff after dinner.
  • Foodservice - Covering the commercial side of the food world, including restaurants, food companies and much more.
  • Pubs - Covering everything from the corner tavern to multinational chains.

 Child WikiProjetcs

These WikiProjects arose from this one and cover such broad subject matters that they became WikiProjects in their own right:

  • WikiProject Bacon - With the intense interest in bacon in the last few years, this project was created to address all the new articles created as a result.
  • WikiProject Beer - With the rise of the craft beer movement, beer has also had a major revitalization of interest. This Project covers beer styles, culture and manufactures as well as many other beer related subjects.
  • WikiProject Breakfast - The first meal of the day, it is an important meal and is different all over the world.
  • WikiProject Spirits - This covers the subject of distilled spirits and beverages. Drinks such as whiskey, bourbon and vodka all fall under the aegis of this WikiProject.
  • WikiProject Wine - As wine productions has expanded globally, wine has become a major industry and the center of an expanding cultural movement. This Project covers wine types, culture and manufactures as well as many other wine related subjects.

These WikiProjects cover such subject matters that are related and deeply intertwined with this Project:

  • WikiProject Agriculture - This WikiProject covers topics that have to do with subjects related farming, animal husbandry, agribusiness, etc.
  • WikiProject Brands - This WikiProject covers information regarding products, brands, brand management and all brand-related topics.
  • WikiProject Fisheries and Fishing - This WikiProject covers information regarding fisheries, aquaculture and fishing.
  • WikiProject Health and Fitness - This WikiProject covers information regarding health coverage and the organization of the subjects of health and fitness.
  • WikiProject Medicine - This WikiProject covers information regarding medical and health content.
  • WikiProject Pharmacology - This WikiProject covers information relating to pharmacology, the science of medications, and other pharmacology-related topics.

 External WikiProjects

  • WikiMedia Commons & WikiProject Food and Beverages - This Commons WikiProject is an offshoot of our own Project. While WP:F&D primarily focuses on improving on-topic articles, Commons:WikiProject Food and Beverages ("COM:F&B") focuses on acquiring and/or locating images and other media, organizing and categorizing them properly, and highlighting the best images in related galleries. This work benefits all of the Wikimedia Foundation sites, because when media is well organized, it is easy to find and use everywhere.
  • WikiBooks & WikiProject Bartending - This Wikibooks WikiProject is an offshoot of one of our own Project Task Forces, Bartending. It oversees the ongoing maintenance and improvement of the Wikibooks Bartending Guide.

The editors and contributors to Wikipedia and the Food and Drink WikiProject are the lifeblood of this project. Without you, we cannot reach our goal of becoming the premier site on the web for Food and Drink-related information! To that end, we have taken several steps to help you help us meet our goal.

You can click on the Open tasks or Assessment department main page link above or go directly to the individual pages by using the navigation bar.

 How can you help?

You don't have to join our project to work on Food and Drink-related articles. We welcome everyone who wants to help improve these topics, and encourage you—project member or not—to participate in all of our activities and take full advantage of the support we offer.

Our list of open tasks contains multiple articles that need different types of improvement; there are several lists of things that need to be done. Please feel free to select something that interests you and start editing!

  • There are Project related items that need to be completed on our Tasks list;
  • Specific article related items that have been identified as needing attention by the Project are found on the To do list;
  • Articles that need to verified are on the Articles needing citations list;
  • Articles that need expansion are found on Stubs expansion list;
  • Requests for new articles are found on the Requested articles lists.

If you would like to advertise your participation, you can formally join the project by adding your name to the list of members, or by adding one of our userboxes to your user page.

 Assessment

Assessments are how Wikipedia ranks articles using a system which allows us to monitor the quality of articles in within the project subject areas, and to prioritize work on these articles. It is based on a standard system of assessments, but these ratings are meant primarily for the internal use of the project, and usually do not imply any official standing within Wikipedia as a whole.

As you can see by the chart to the left, we have numerous articles of varying quality and importance. If you wish to have an article assessed, please list it on our Assessment page, linked above. If you would like to try your hand at assessing an article, please feel free to! A complete list of the classifications our project uses is listed on the Assessment Department page, and you can also take the time to join our Assessment Task Force on the Project Membership page.
