"Wavin' Flag"
Song

"Wavin' Flag" is a song by K'naan from his album Troubadour, reaching #2 on the Canadian Hot 100. A remake by a supergroup of Canadian artists, credited as Young Artists for Haiti, became a charity single, with this new version going straight to #1 on the Canadian charts. A version of the song featuring will.i.am and David Guetta is targetted for international release. The song also appears on the soundtrack for the video game NBA 2K10.

The song was chosen as Coca-Cola's promotional anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to be held in South Africa. The English version was released as "Wavin' Flag (The Celebration Mix)" by K'naan and many other bilingual and country-specific versions have been released.

Wavin' Flag original single

"Wavin' Flag" is the third official single (eighth single overall) from K'naan's Troubadour album, which was produced by Kerry Brothers, Jr. (co-produced by Bruno Mars).[2] It reached #2 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart. It was performed acoustically live on Q TV[3] by K'naan and his band to give viewers a preview of Troubadour prior to its release.

Chart performance

"Wavin' Flag" was made available for digital download in the United States in March 2009 before it was released as a single. It managed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 at #99, making it K'naan's first and only song to do so. It debuted at #82 on the Canadian Hot 100 and peaked at #2, making it his most successful single to date.

2010 charity single version by Young Artists for Haiti

"Wavin' Flag"
Song

In early 2010, the song was remade by a supergroup of Canadian artists, credited as Young Artists for Haiti, as a charity single to benefit relief efforts following the 2010 Haiti earthquake.[9]

The charity single was spearheaded by producer Bob Ezrin and was reworked to include specific lyrics for Haiti (including a rap solo by Drake) and was released on March 12, 2010[10] with proceeds going to Free the Children, War Child Canada and World Vision Canada.

Participating soloists included (in order of appearance) K'naan, Nelly Furtado, Sam Roberts, Avril Lavigne, Pierre Bouvier, Tyler Connolly, Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, LIGHTS, Deryck Whibley, Serena Ryder, Jacob Hoggard, Emily Haines, Hawksley Workman, Drake, Chin Injeti, Ima, Pierre Lapointe, Elisapie Isaac, Esthero, Corb Lund, Fefe Dobson, Nikki Yanofsky, Matt Mays, Justin Nozuka and Justin Bieber.

Performing the chorus (including the soloists) were Arkells, Lamar Ashe, Broken Social Scene, Torquil Campbell, Canadian Tenors, Aion Clarke, City and Colour, Tom Cochrane, Jim Cuddy, Jim Creeggan, Kathleen Edwards, Dave Faber, Jessie Farrell, Colin James, Pat Kordyback, Brandon Lehti, Colin MacDonald, Jay Malinowski, Stacey McKitrick, Suzie McNeil, Stephan Moccio, Kevin Parent, Josh Ramsay, Red 1, Hayley Sales, James Shaw and Shiloh.

Students from Vancouver high schools Lord Byng Secondary and Magee Secondary also voluntarily participated by playing together as an orchestra.[11]

A music video was shot for the charity single at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Chart performance

"Wavin' Flag" debuted at number one on the Canadian Hot 100 on the issue dated March 27, 2010. It is the third song in the chart's history to debut at number one, after Eminem's "Crack a Bottle" and Taylor Swift's "Today Was a Fairytale" did so in February 2009 and February 2010, respectively.

2010 version Wavin' Flag (The Celebration Mix) by K'naan

"Wavin' Flag"
Song

This version was chosen as the official song of Coca-Cola for their 2010 FIFA World Cup program.[13] The song was recorded under the title "Wavin' Flag (The Celebration Mix)". It was also featured on the soundtrack of the EA Sports video game 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

K'Naan has specially recorded a version of the song for the tournament, hosted by South Africa. The remix of "Wavin' Flag" is part of Coca-Cola's global integrated marketing campaign "inspired by the joyous dance celebrations familiar to Africa."

K'Naan's "Wavin' Flag" will be used as the music element throughout the entire campaign including as the soundtrack on all global Coca-Cola TV commercials for the soccer tournament. It will also be played at events for the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola, and featured on the online digital platform for the World Cup.

K'Naan will be performing the song live during the African element of the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola, which will take the Trophy to 86 countries, including every nation in Africa.

A music video was shot for "Wavin' Flag (The Celebration Mix)", which includes a guest appearance by Damian Marley.[14]

Differences from the original

"Wavin' Flag (The Celebration Mix)" is a recast version of a track off K'naan's set Troubadour. Although featuring many elements of the original song, it includes most notably a new pre-chorus that sets the uplifting, unified tone of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, turning the song into one that is "more open, more inviting, more celebratory", the artist says. "I'm so proud of this [new] version," K'naan told Billboard.Biz..

"We took something like 50 drums and did this crazy mix for it. It's about the one time that we all get together and the world forgets its conflict and its problems and we focus on this unity and celebration. That moment is connected now to 'Wavin' Flag.'"

2010: Other Celebration Mix versions

Many versions of "Wavin' Flag: The Celebration Mix" have been made, some bilingual as in English/Spanish, or English/Arabic or English/Portuguese and many times with amended English language lyrics and often with different musical arrangements.

The initial bilingual version was done by K'naan and Spanish singer David Bisbal (in English and Spanish) and targetting all Latin markets (Spain, Mexico, Central and South America). The song "Wavin' Flag (Coca Cola Spanish Celebration Mix)" was officially made available for digital downloads as early as February 2010. As a part of the promotion, a music video of the K'naan/Bisbal version was filmed and released for the song.[15].

A bilingual English/Chinese version is also available, by K'naan, Jacky Cheung and Jane Zhang. Another bilingual English/Thai version is also available, by K'naan and Tattoo Colour. There is also an English/Arabic version (in Egyptian dialect) featuring Nancy Ajram, a Lebanese performance artist and spokesperson for Coke Middle East.
