Md. Shamsul Islam (born. October 9, 1958) is a Bangladeshi tax consultant who previously served as the vice-president of the Dhaka Taxes Bar Association for the session 2015-2016 under President Mazom Ali Khan of the same Taxes Bar Association, during the dictatorship of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of President Mohammad Abdul Hamid of Bangladesh. Shamsul Islam served as the vice-president of the Dhaka Taxes Bar Association under the ticket of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party at a time when almost all part of the nation's bureaucracy was heavily dominated by Sheikh Hasina's Bangladesh Awami League.

Early Life and Education

Md. Shamsul Islam was born on October 9, 1958 in Nawabganj area of Dhaka District in the erstwhile eastern wing of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan during the presidency of Iskandar Ali Mirza. He was the third child and eldest son of Shamsul Alam and Rahima Khanom's five children. His father worked for the Government Printing Press and his mother was a homemaker. Md. Shamsul Islam had his early education in Government Laboratory High School from where he earned his Secondary School and Higher Secondary Certificate in 1973 and 1975 respectively, a few years after East Pakistan seceded to become the new sate of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

During the presidency of Ziaur Rahman, Shamsul Islam achieved his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dhaka College in 1977. Later in 1979, he earned his Master of Commerce degree from the (now the Jagannath University).

Career

After completing his post-graduate education, Md. Shamsul Islam joined the Dhaka Taxes Bar Association as a tax consultant in 1981. During the military dictatorship of Lt. General Hussain Muhammad Ershad, Shamsul Islam served as a committee member of ward no. 48 (now ward no. 14) of the Dhaka City Corporation. During the dictatorship of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mazom Ali Khan and Md. Shamsul Islam were elected as President and Vice-President of the Dhaka Taxes Bar Association for session year 2015-2016 under the ticket of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Personal Life

Md. Shamsul Islam married Shahana Khanam, a daughter of Late Haji Momotaz Uddin Khan who was the owner of several business enterprises including the Rahmania Coir Foam Industries and Shoformali River Transportation Ltd. With Shahana Khanam, Islam has two children: a son, Shams Al Farabi and a daughter, Fayequa Shams. After Mrs. Shahana Islam passed away in 2002, Shamsul Islam married Ashrafi Khanam in 2003.

In January 2024, at the age of 65, Md. Shamsul Islam was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer and is currently going through treatment at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India and Dhaka Cancer and General Hospital of Dhaka city.
