WMF Pakistan local chapter

[edit]

Hi samar, we are proposing to establish local chapter of WMF in Pakistan. Could you please announce about it on Pakistan Wikiproject page. Here's the link [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.190.153.85 (talk) 11:30, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be happy to join. Have you contacted other active Wikipedians from Pakistan?Samar Talk 15:58, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know few Wikipedians from Karachi personally and they're interested to join in the process of establishing this proposed chapter however we need more volunteers so right now, I'm trying to gather people as much I can. Recently, we've got our mailing list at [2] for discussion about the chapter. Please sign-up asap so that we will be in touch with everyone in the mailing list.

Also, I request you to inform other Wikipedians from Pakistan about this so that more will know about this. thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.190.153.85 (talk) 17:57, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a suggestion, use a bot to deliver a message on the talkpage of all Pakistani Wikipedians. Individually sending messages will be tedious and we will miss many. See these lists; Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan/Members and Category:WikiProject Pakistan members. Samar Talk 07:16, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
good idea samar. I was thinking the same but not through bot but Wikipedia:Geonotice. however i know there's a bot User:EdwardsBot, who can deliver the message to users belongs to a specific category. But because I don't have a user account here on en.wp anymore, can you try to request him please? thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.190.153.85 (talk) 08:42, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am a bit busy in real life and may not be able to follow up regularly for some time. Why don't you create an account? Samar Talk 08:11, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Urdu script

[edit]

I have started an article Shabnam Shakeel, could you please write the Urdu script of her name in the article? It'll go like this Shabnam Shakeel (Urdu: Urdu script goes here, 12 March 1942–2 March 2013) was a poet, academic... --Tito Dutta (contact) 20:00, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Added the script and changed the date format from x March to March x. The script somehow is not working with the first format. Samar Talk 05:18, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! --Tito Dutta (contact) 09:55, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

:)...Did you accidentally put it on my page Tito, I didn't expand the article. Congrats on the DYK btw, may you have a hundred more :) Samar Talk 06:33, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not accidentally! It took me 20 minutes to write that article, but, it could have taken me 1 year to learn Urdu alphabet and language (I started few years ago, but, could learn only basic letter, aliph, be, pe, te etc... that's all). So, you have saved my 1 year! --Tito Dutta (contact) 09:47, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll contact you if I ever need help with Hindi, Bengali script. It will take me a lot longer than a year.Samar Talk 15:22, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maria0333 Talk

[edit]

Hello Samar, I just read your message on Maria0333 Talk Page, Really I have tried every thing possible, but she is not willing to agree. She has made an image, but now trying to move it on the top of all. You should do something more than commenting. Please do something if you can, here I am fed up. Anyway thanks for your messages. Regards. Faizan (talk) 09:25, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Besides these, she is also attacking personally, as she did in the edit summary to the revision link upside. Faizan (talk) 09:27, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your point. There is nothing much I can do aside from guide and suggest. This image has been added to many articles where it has little significance, but getting into an edit war is not a good idea. I suggest you take this to ANI or request an admin to look into it. Yes, the personal remarks and comments in Urdu are not appropriate. Samar Talk 10:38, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion at WP:Articles for deletion/Pakistan Green

[edit]

You are invited to join the discussion at WP:Articles for deletion/Pakistan Green. Captain Conundrum (talk) 13:09, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Heya Samar! Just a Thanks to you for your expansion and contributions to Sanaullah Haq. Faizan -Let's talk! 05:31, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Np, there is plenty of details from established sources available about him and the incidence, I just can't find time to expand it properly. Will probably add quotes and reactions of PM and the ministers. And anyways, the article does not qualify any of the deletion criteria, the nom is unbelievable. Something of this scale where Govts. and PMs are involved and security concerns are raised deserve more than a couple of lines in another article. Samar Talk 06:52, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but some people have itching over WIkipedia's coverage of such articles. The nom was really unjustifiable, and I think that we have got enough support for "keep" at the discussion, and as far as expansion is concerned, that's the only way to save it from deletion! So I will request to get some time for it, otherwise you have already done a great job, Thanking you again! Faizan -Let's talk! 09:42, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have expanded, there were some statements by HR organizations from India and Pakistan but could not find them. Some articles deserve to be nominated, like Islamic/Pakistan Green (!, IMO) but this is too much. Anyways, I hope the nom is closed quickly, there is some DYK in there.Samar Talk 14:39, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Apart from your opposition at those colour shades, I am really thankful to you! Faizan -Let's talk! 05:25, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Namaste Samar Ji, kaise hain aap (i.e. how are you?). You may see the latest discussion here. Ignore the personal issues part, you may check our presentation ideas. Have you submitted any presentation? Have you applied for scholarship? TitoDutta 03:06, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The issues you mentioned are quite similar to Pakistan's; not enough reliable content online and in literature to support articles and a number of articles are in continuous state of edit wars because they do not please one particular group or another. Hence most of the content I believe is unreliable or does not present a neutral view, even the ones I worked on because we do not know all aspects of the topic. If I were attending, I would have worked with you on a presentation related to the sub-continent topics and the issues faced in this scope.
As for the scholarship, no I didn't. I applied last year but didn't get in and I was not active this year so most certainly will not pass phase 2. Samar Talk 09:10, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments, the world's largest photography competition, will be taking place in Pakistan this September. Hello. Why did you make those edits at List of cultural heritage sites in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when you didn't cite a source? Your edit summary said "offline sources", but where are they? Why not cite them? Thanks. Acalycine(talk/contribs) 11:15, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Acalycine, thank you for following the article. The edit you are referring to corrected the location of the sites which is not based on original research as you pointed out to the IP user, it is based on geographical location. Also, unfortunately you will not find any online source for most of the sites in Pakistan; they are either available with the local councils, educational institutions or other concerned department, usually in hand-written records.
We are currently in the process of recording thousands of historical sites under the Wiki Loves Monuments event, please note that this is work in progress (hence underconstruction template). Online/offline sources where available will be added in due time. You can help us along in expanding the list:) Samar Talk 11:42, 15 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help regarding edit drive and Pakistani Cultural Heritage

[edit]

Hi there,

Thanks for appreciating my contributions. I just wanted some help from you. You left a note on my talk page in which u asked me to "provide the article link on the lists pages. For example, Sheikhupura Fort is PB/39 in the Punjab list"

I'm a bit confused about those lists pages you mentioned like which "Lists Pages" those are?? and is PB/39 an article link?? If it is then where do I need to provide it??

In addition another user left a message on my talk page in which he mentioned "If possible, please try to add address, co-ordinates as well image of the sites you working on in the relevant lists". Here once again I'm confused about "Relevant Lists", where do I need to provide address, co-ordinates and images of the sites??

HELP's APPRECIATED !!

Farhan Khurram (talk) 20:54, 1 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, actually Samar wanted you to update the wikilink of the Sheikhupura Fort in the table-list of Punjab. This diff might help you. You can provide the address of the sites in the text and images & coordinates in the infobox. Faizan 06:13, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

[edit]

Is it the first edit drive on cultural heritage? Should make a mention at the awards. Also I suggest that we should move "Edit Drive" to "Edit Drive 2014" for convenience, if the plan is to hold these drives later too. Also the text of the awards can be expanded by making mention of the articles the concerned contributor created, and amend "Pakistan related" to make it "Pakistan-related". Regards. Faizan 19:43, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You can move the page to Wikipedia:WikiProject Pakistan/Pakistani Cultural Heritage Edit Drive 2014 if you want to. Change the name here also. This was a test run to see the response of the community which so far has not been very encouraging, so we are not sure about the future. I am not at all keen on adding the names/numbers of articles and contributions in the awards. Have made the other recommended changes. Samar Talk 20:59, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Samar, sign the barnstar messages you gave after the edit drive. And sort out the positions too. Faizan 17:42, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Faizan: there are no positions. There were only two participants! You will still be getting the merchandise, please get in touch with Saqib. Samar Talk 17:47, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am personally sorry for not being able to commit myself to this drive. Some real-life commitments have had me engaged recently. However, I am hopeful of participating in any such effort in the future depending on the space given to me by time-related constraints. I think it may be useful to host such drives and contests on the Urdu Wikipedia where there are likely to be more responsive Pakistani users. The Pakistani user base on the English Wikipedia is generally limited and stagnant in nature, and the few who are active here form a small class of editors. There may be other factors involved too. Perhaps the timing of arranging such a contest should be noted next time, to see if there are enough editors around (as many may tend to be busy this time of the year, as I was). The 2012 Tag and Assess Contest was not too bad in comparison. Mar4d (talk) 07:54, 2 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Mar4d: I am not on Urdu wiki but yes, we will plan something in the future for that as well. This drive was the precursor to a larger event Wiki Loves Monuments which will be held in September (entire month). We wanted the local editors on English Wikipedia to expand the related articles. The timing, though not perfect, was selected because earlier we had to sort some other planning issues with WLM and later in August it would have been too late.
If you want to help with the photography competition, please send me an email. You can see the website here. Samar Talk 08:22, 2 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would absolutely love to participate in WLM but I don't think I'll be much useful. I'm not in Pakistan at the moment. Thumbs up to you for taking the initiative though. I do hope you are promoting this event on social media as much as possible and giving it maximum coverage, as there are millions of talented and enthusiastic photographers in Pakistan. Perhaps you should also contact mainsteam newspapers like Dawn and The Express Tribune for promotion, I'm sure they can give you space :) Mar4d (talk) 10:04, 2 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for giving me Pakistan Star, that's the first ever Barn Star for me on Wikipedia, it's a motivation for me to continue my contributions on Wikipedia specially the projects I'm involved in. I know that only two participants (including me) contributed in the competition and it was quite disappointing for all of us, just 25 articles were created whereas there were more then 10 competitors.

during the month of July (Ramadan as well) I was heavily sick and was unable to contribute anymore which is the reason my contributions were that less but still coming 1st is an honor for me!!. I'm looking forward for a next competition to start so I can give my best next time and to contribute as much as I can, Thanks again !!
