Suffix
-mainen or mäinen
- Combined with a noun, forms an adjective signifying resemblance. Often translated into English as -like, -shaped or -ous. Works with many, but not any, nouns.
- kaasu -> kaasumainen = gas -> gaseous
- neste -> nestemäinen = liquid -> liquid
- kello -> kellomainen = bell -> bell-shaped
- Forms an adjective from a noun which ends with -maa or -maat, referring to a group of countries (exception kotimaa = home country).
- kotimaa -> kotimainen = home country -> domestic
- ulkomaat -> ulkomainen = foreign countries -> foreign
- Pohjoismaat -> pohjoismainen = Nordic countries -> Nordic
