Suffix

-mainen or mäinen

  1. Combined with a noun, forms an adjective signifying resemblance. Often translated into English as -like, -shaped or -ous. Works with many, but not any, nouns.
    kaasu -> kaasumainen = gas -> gaseous
    neste -> nestemäinen = liquid -> liquid
    kello -> kellomainen = bell -> bell-shaped
  2. Forms an adjective from a noun which ends with -maa or -maat, referring to a group of countries (exception kotimaa = home country).
    kotimaa -> kotimainen = home country -> domestic
    ulkomaat -> ulkomainen = foreign countries -> foreign
    Pohjoismaat -> pohjoismainen = Nordic countries -> Nordic

Words with this suffix are inflected like hevonen or ihminen.
