From English funk (foul or unpleasant smell; funk music), via dialectal French funquer, funquier (to smoke, reek), from Vulgar Latin fūmicāre, an alteration of Latin fūmigāre (to smoke, fumigate), from fūmus (smoke). Doublet of fumo.
