From Middle Welsh gwlat, from Old Welsh gulat, from Proto-Brythonic *gwlad, from Proto-Celtic *wlatis (sovereignty); from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wélh₁tis ~ *h₂wl̥h₁téy-, from the root *h₂welh₁-.
