benzene, because of its ease of purification, is one of the secondary standards for physical
measurements and is a common solvent dipole moment determination. It has been used
extensively as a solvent in acid-base titration in nonaqueous solvents.
A research grade, 99,94% m, is available from Phillips Petroleum Co. Other high purity grades
are available.
The benzene met ACS Reagent grade specifications for boiling range and freezing point. the
saturated nonbenzenoid hydrocarbons were obtained by fractional crystallization, fraction
adsorption, an fractional distillation. it was found that the impurities were a complex mixture
that is predominantly naphthenic.
the estimated impurities were: saturated nonbenzenoid hydrocarbons, o.6% v; toluene,
0.004% v; unidentified, 0.1% v. the results indicated a correlation between the freezing point
depression of 0.67 and paraffin content of 1%. another investigation showed that european
nitration grade benzene from coke plant production contained mainly naphthenes and
methylcyclohexane.
y metilciclohexano.
BENZENE
The analytical reagent grade benzene is satisfactory for most purposes; if required dry, it is
first treated with anhydrous calcium chloride, filtered and then placed over sodium wire(for
experimental details, see under 15 Diethyl ether) or a type 5A molecular sieve.
Commercial benzene may contain thiophene C4H4S; bp 85C which cannot be separated by
distillation or by fractional crystallisation. the presence of thiophene may be detected by
shaking 3 ml of benzene with a solution of 10 mg of isatin in 10 ml of concentrated sulphuric
acid and allowing the mixture to stand for a short time: a bluish-green colouration is produced
if thiophen is present. The thiophen may be removed from benzene by shaking with
concentrated sulphuric acid, advantage being taken of the fact that thiophene is more readily
sulfonated than benzene. The technical benzene is shaken repeatedly with about 15 per cent
of its volume of concentrated sulphuric acid in a stoppered separatory funnel* until the acid
layer is colourless or very pale yellow on standing, or until the thiophen test is negative. After
each shaking lasting a few minutes, the mixture is allowed to settle and the lower layer is
drawn off. the benzene is the shaken twice with water in order to remove most of acid , once
with 10 per cent sodium carbonate solution, again with water and finally dried with anhydrous
calcium chloride. After filtration, the benzene is distilled through an efficent column and the
fraction, b.p 80-81 C, collected. If required perfectly dry the distillation benzene may either be
stored over sodium wire or left in the presence of type 5A molecular sieve. Pure benzene has
b.p 80/760 mmHg and m.p 5.5 C
