The city was founded in the 16th century south of the Yalench'en hill, a Tzotzil
area, which was formerly known as San Bartolomé de los Llanos.
On February 13, 1934, the names of the saints were changed to the towns of the
State and the name of San Bartolomé was changed to Venustiano Carranza, being
Governor Victórico R. Grajales.
The Dominicans built their convent to evangelize, also founded San Bartolomé de
los Llanos today Venustiano Carranza, this municipality for its geographical
location (center of the state) has been a settlement and crossroads since ancient
times, testimony of this are the presence of the Tzotzil language groups (in the
municipal seat) and Tzeltal (in Aguacatenango) and the vestiges of greatness of
Soyatitán and Copanahuastla.
Among the illustrious characters are: Corazon de Jesus Borraz Moreno, performer
of the double keyboard of the marimba, Jose Angel Francisco Santiago Borraz,
musician composer, inventor of the requinto of the marimba and Teresa Aguilar de
Moreno, composer of the songs "Padrecito Ruben", "Mi Lindo San Bartolomé".
In this symbolic municipality, also known as "the cradle of the marimba", visitors
can marvel at the essence of the old royal road, which treasures a wealth of
surprises such as its unique buildings, its culture, its exquisite textiles and great
natural attractions, which awaken a broad historical and cultural interest, without
leaving aside the importance of the emblematic instrument, from its elaboration
process to reach the beautiful melodies.
Dr. Belisario Dominguez Hydroelectric Power Plant, better known by the people of
Chiapas as La Angostura Dam.
Churches: There are 7 churches in the city, built between the XVI and XVII
centuries, visit the church of Aguacatenango founded in the XVII century of the
Virgin of Nativity and know its altarpieces; its 17 butlers and 34 saints and virgins.
Museums: The City Museum located in the central park, which offers a sample of
our culture and origins, with part of the history of the marimba and 2 private
museums: that of Mr. Manuel Caballero with a vast inventory of paintings and
sculptures; and that of Don Juan Maria Morales Avendaño with archaeological
pieces of our municipality.
Spas: For those who want to enjoy and bathe in clean, filtered waters, one of the
few in the world, we suggest visiting "Los Baños del Carmen". As well as the VELO
DE NOVIA, which is located 3 km from the head of the municipality.
The most important celebrations are: San Sebastián, San Bartolomé, Nuestra
Señora del Carmen, La Asunción de Soyatitán and Aguacatenango, Esquipulas
and Santa Teresa.
Venustiano Carranza is famous for its typical bean tamales, turulete sweets,
empanizado, yolk fritters, nougat, melcocha and polvorones; as well as its white
and cocoa pozol drinks, tepache and the adults, tavern.
In 50 years, I imagine Venustiano Carranza with more universities, more job
opportunities for graduates, people who value handicrafts, shopping malls and
better hospitals.
