For qualitative data archiving, this involves engaging with researchers to address the specific issues arising from the distinct characteristics of qualitative data; to develop joint solutions to the ethical challenges of data re-use; to encourage researcher up-take of the archive; and to create opportunities for collaboration in areas such as the creation of metadata and data management planning. In the case of Indigenous archives, moreover, the user community is extended to include Indigenous communities as partners in the compilation and repatriation of knowledge and data. In this session, we reflect on the process of engaging with stakeholders and respecting researcher autonomy in the operation of three qualitative data archives: the UK's Qualidata; the Australian Qualitative Archive; and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Data Archive.

As such linked data can be quite disclosive and potentially sensitive, it is important that researchers obtain informed consent from the individuals whose data are being linked. When formulating appropriate informed consent, there are several things that researchers need to take into account. Besides legal and ethical questions, key aspects to consider are the differences between platforms and data types. Depending on what type of social media data is collected, how the data are collected, and from which platform(s), different points need to be addressed in the informed consent. In this paper, we present three case studies in which survey data were linked with data from 1) Twitter, 2) Facebook, and 3) LinkedIn and discuss how the specific features of the platforms and data collection methods were covered in the informed consent. ...

The template is based on an existing contract, and the commentary provides details on the scope and detail of the contract noting considerations for changes within particular local circumstances. The objective is to provide necessary information for two parties to conclude a contract which provides a legally acceptable method to provide cross-national access to confidential data. The basis is an existing contract between the Research Data Centre of the Federal Employment Agency at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB FDZ), Nuremberg, Germany, and the UK Data Service at the UK Data Archive, University of Essex. It provides an important framework for future data use agreements and serves as a generic template that can easily be adapted to other institutions planning to facilitate access to their sensitive microdata via Safe Room Remote Desktop Access. The DDI is appropriate for describing study, file and variable level information for qualitative datasets, but TEI-like headers are also required to enable XML-based data exploration. ESDS Qualidata has identified a growing need for a standard framework (for data and content-level metadata) for facilitating the sharing, presentation and exchange of digital qualitative data via the web. To this end we have already developed a basic prototype methodology using XML standards and technologies. Recent work has focused on specifying a general and formal application for encoding, searching and retrieving the content of a broad class of social science data resources. Work in progress has been to formulate a recommended set of guidelines for preparing and marking-up data to a common and minimum recommended X...

It states the progress and status of work in the second year of the SSHOC project (M12-M24).<br> The report starts with a general plan for the SSHOC project in Year 2 (2020), and lists the main objectives set up to be achieved. The next section is the main part of this deliverable and focuses on the activities implemented in each Work Package, and describes the progress done in 2020. The section also contains a reference to the deviations from the DoA that happened in this period, and risk assessment status.<br> The final chapter contains the summary on the delivery of project outputs (namely deliverables), achievement of project milestones, and the use of resources. An overview of all the SSHOC 2020 relevant events is added to the document as an appendix.
