Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine in Russia’s Great War and Revolution, 1914-22, Edited by Anthony J. Heywood, Scott W. Palmer, and Julia A. Lajus, 2022

The sudden growth and collapse of the war industry during the Great War upended not only the environment, but society as well. The effects of technological growth, divorced from ecological moderation and human norms, were such that economic improvements were offset by wasted resources and depleted resources. The destruction that the Great War and the armed conflicts following the Russian Revolution wreaked on the fronts was echoed by destruction in the rear. The manufacture of explosives resulted in the creation of grim, poisoned militarised spaces, and the production of death.

The paper considers the process of forming political authority during the 1917 Russian Revolution... more The paper considers the process of forming political authority during the 1917 Russian Revolution on the example of anarchist Shlioma Asnin. The importance of belonging to a subculture for building a political figure’s image and an enemy image is demonstrated. Various options of participation in a revolutionary subculture are considered, and mutual influence between common-criminal and revolutionary subcultures is described. Hard labor created “counter-mores” shared by both groups of criminals but social capital accumulated within political-prison subculture could not necessarily be translated into political authority at liberty. In Asnin’s case, perception of him as a revolutionary was undermined by a tattoo discovered on his body, the tattoo being linked to his common-criminal past before his “conversion” into a convinced anarchist. A revolutionary’s image was “assembled” from the elements some of which made the person unacceptable for society in general. Pathologization of opponents, in part due to subcultural identity, made political dialogue more difficult and increased the probability of violence. Methods of sociology of deviance were employed as the paper’s analytical apparatus.

The paper looks at the context and circumstances that determined the actions of prominent international anarchist leaders Alexander Berkman and Emma Goldman during their stay in Russia of the period of “war communism” in 1920–21. The author uses the hitherto untapped archival and press sources to explain the role of international revolutionaries in the political system of early Soviet Russia. Goldman and Berkman were provided with significant resources and travelled the length and breadth of the war-ravaged country, meeting everyone from the top leaders to poor peasants. Russian politicians viewed Berkman and Goldman as major figures in the international workers’ movement. Since 1917, their personal influence affected the protest actions of Petrograd anarchists. Their publishing and literary activities also exerted a discernible impact on the Russian anarchist movement, and personal links with some of the most prominent Russian revolutionaries also helped increase their public status. Both Goldman and Berkman eulogized the Bolshevik regime in their US pamphlets. As members of a group of mostly-anarchist deportees, they were given the red-carpet welcome. The deportees, misrepresented by Petrograd press as ‘Communists’, featured prominently in propaganda events on arrival in Russia. Their stories about imminent revolution in the West and police brutality in a capitalist democracy contributed to the propaganda aimed at the Soviet population. Berkman and Goldman applied for Soviet residence permits, with the former describing himself as a ‘citizen of the world – cosmopolite’ on the form, the formula being a reflection of various influences he received in the anarchist movement. Some of their works were published in Russian, albeit Goldman’s article on Peter Kropotkin in the historical journal Byloe is evidence of her willingness to accommodate Soviet censorship’s limitations. Goldman and Berkman were also assigned ‘responsible worker’ positions at the Petrograd fuel authority, Petrotop. Despite their criticism of such privileges, the resources granted to them by the Soviet authorities, which sought to get the support of the international anarchist movement, made them authoritative witnesses of the Russian revolution. This made their later criticism of the Communist regime even more persuasive and contributed to the international anarchist movement’s split from Communist front groups, such as the Third International.

It traces the social and ideological mechanisms of popular mobilization that caused the workers to join these units (the Red Guard, a workers’ battalion), as well as their political and military function. In the wake of the Russian imperial state’s collapse and the developing civil war, paramilitaries were filling the void of authority and forming new power institutions at a local level. A gradual shift in motivation to join the militia, from volunteering to coercive drafting, was linked to the crystallization of new state structures.

[The article looks at the first widely reported instance of rejection of the Provisional Government’s authority during the 1917 Russian revolution, the so-called Shlisselburg Republic. On the basis of a range of sources, some of which were not used by researchers before, it is shown that the resolutions of the Shlisselburg District Revolutionary People’s Committee on the land question and on relations with the Provisional Government were determined by the local situation rather than ideological stance of the far-left as earlier studies argued. All-Russian notoriety of the incident is shown to be linked to the political conjuncture of Russia’s April crisis. The newspapers, particularly conservative dailies, used Shlisselburg as an example of ‘anarchy’ in their reports, many of which significantly distorted the local circumstances, as part of pressure on socialists to force them into a government coalition. The far-left (Bolsheviks and anarchists) cited Shlisselburg as an example of revolutionary creativity of the masses. Existing accounts of local political and social forces are corrected, and limited influence of workers and the far-left is shown.]

Abstract:
The role of Shlisselburg (Schlüsselburg) in Russia's political imagination is considered on the material of the early post-revolutionary period. The use of memory of Shlisselburg's political prisoners in revolutionary subculture and for legitimisation of authorities is shown. Comparative analysis of different segments and levels of memorial culture indicates existence of common mechanisms shared by revolutionary memorial culture.
