I completed the college in 1993 at Nicosia, North Cyprus. Subsequently, I pursued my education in Civil Engineering department followed by Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering, later changing my major to Materials. I like laboratory facilies because they allow me to work directly with materials.I received my PhD from the Civil Engineering Department. While pursuing my doctorate degree, I was a full time research assistant at Eastern Mediterranean university in 2006. I completed my BSc, Msc, and PhD degrees from the same department and university. My PhD thesis focused on the “Utilization of High Volume Fly Ash Cement Paste in the Manufacture of Building Materials”. During my doctorate studies, I have enrolled as a researcher in a TUBITAK Project on “The utilization of high volume fly ash cement paste fiber reinforced composites in civil engineering applications” Project No: 1991027 (İNTAG-650). As a part of this project, I collected huge amount of laboratory data to develop various high volume fly ash cement paste composites. I used my leisure time to develop the mixture design combinations especially for cement paste and mortar. After the completion of my PhD, I noticed the new trend of “sustainability”.I compiled and read carefully many research papers to determine the gaps in this area and identify mixture design parameters and terms used currently in the field. Subsequently, I tried to use the available wastes in North Cyprus, including marble dust and bottom ash. Various strategies have been developed to improve the sustainability of concrete. The current trend is to use large amounts of waste from the building industry. After my PhD graduation, I joined the Cyprus International University in 2006 as an instructor. In 2007, I was appointed as a vice chair of the Civil Engineering Department, and I remained in this position until 2013. From 2008 to 2012, I served as chair of the Management Information Systems department. During that period, I advised and prepared the technical report for the Levent Engineering company. Specifically, I worked on the preparation of the mix design for the Levent Ready Mix Plant. Since 2013, I have been working at the European University of Lefke. I am the vice dean of the engineering faculty and instructor at the civil engineering department. My research interests include sustainability, non-destructive testing (NDT), assessment of concrete structure properties using NDT, waste management, mixture design, paste and mortar durability, and sulfate resistance.I supervised two government funded projects. I was the primary investigator of the project that received the highest funding for the fiscal year One of the project was related to the utilization of high volume fly ash in North Cyprus building sector. The other project was related to the utilization of marble powder in the North Cyprus building sector. I developed a mix design used for marble at the Levent concrete batch plant, which involved replacing a sand by small amount of marble. Finally, I am the researcher of the project “Utilization of recycled glass-enriched high-volume fly ash cement paste composites.” In this project, we used various amount of recycled glass as a fine aggregate addition and as a replacement of cement. This project proposed two different mixture combinations.I prepared a technical advisory report for government and private service, providing NDT assessment of the existing concrete buildings.Every week, I tried to read at least 25-30 research papers. During weekend, especially on Sundays, I evaluated those papers and addressed the gaps in the research through a laboratory work that allowed me to optimize the mixture combinations. I supervised three Master theses. Two of them focused on the utilization of industrial wastes in various civil engineering applications. One of them was related to the case study in Asaba, Nigeria, on “solid waste management.”Furthermore, I supervised a recent Master thesis on “The Role of Community Participation in Municipal Solid Waste Management: A Case Study of Asaba Community Nigeria,” which was completed on August 2017. We are working on the paper for possible publication in one of the SCI scanned journal. The second master thesis I supervised was on the “Physical and Mechanical Properties of Fly Ash, Marble Dust and Bottom Ash as a Construction Materials,” which was completed in 2013.The last thesis was on the “Utilization of Wastes and Natural Pozzolans Used in Civil Engineering Construction Sector” completed in 2012.I am the reviewer of the ACI Materials Journal, ACI Structural Journal, Construction and Building materials, Journal of cleaner production, Materials Letters, Structural Concrete Journal, and recently ASTM Journals. I completed at least 50 reviews since 2012. This year, I became a member of the ACI.
