This paper describes the guild composition and niche breadth of understorey bird in Sipisang, West Sumatra. The study was conducted since May 2002 until October 2004 for approximately 10 days each month (totally 284 days or 51.120 net.hours). Fifteen mist nets were operated on ground level separately on three locations, which made 60 m line each. Mist nets were operated from 6.00 AM until 18.00 PM, and checked every two hours. The captured birds were identified, ringed, measured, weighted, photographed and released. In total 1061 individuals were captured during the study; those birds belong to 103 Species and 28 families. Based on guild, study area was dominated by insectivore-frugivore birds (IF) both in species and individual level. Meanwhile terrestrial frugivorous (TF) became the lowest one. Insectivore-frugivore also recorded has the broadest niche breadth. The bird communities dominated by small birds, ...

Three camera traps were deployed separately on three salt lick areas.Nine species of mammals were recorded during the study. Tapirus indicus was thespecies most often photographed (13.5%), followed by Presbytis melalophos (11.3%) andSus scrofa (9.8%). This study also records the activity of human on salt licks areas. Thenumbers of visitation of mammals on three salt licks area differed, both in the numberof species and the number of individual. The differences of mammal visitation on saltlicks were not affected by size, altitude, and distances from village. The results alsoshowed that there was time segregation when entering the salt licks area, both interrestrial mammals and primates.

A new method to monitor biodiversity quickly and efficiently is the NGS technique on environment DNA (eDNA). The study aimed to know the NGS technique’s ability and effectiveness to detect multiple species at one time from the water samples of Maninjau Lake. Water was taken from the surface as much as one L with two replications. The sequencing was used to identify species as shotgun metagenomic with universal primers. The results showed that 92 individuals were identified with 56 species from 24 genera, 16 families, and 12 orders. As much as 25% of fishes still cannot be grouped into the valid taxa (unclassified), which is allegedly related to the lack of available information database (NCBI) compared to the sequences obtained. NGS on the eDNA method detected two families (Cyprinidae and Cichlidae),...

Round-skin technique for preserving avian specimen started to be used as preparation method since 2012, which brought novelty in learning its biological aspects. It provides more reliable taxonomical and molecular materials for future use, which was one of the endorsements for this technique. This article aimed to inventory the round-skin specimen of Passerines in MZUA by using descriptive method to examine their taxonomical and curatorial aspects. As many as 196 avian round-skin specimens have been catalogued until July 2016; 166 of them were from Passeriformes order (Passerines), belonged to 57 species and 14 families. Timaliidae was family with most members collected (67 individuals), followed respectively by Nectariniidae (20 individuals), Pycnonotidae (19 individual...

Historical records on Odonata were contributed by many foreign researchers from Dutch colonial era, including accounts provided by Lieftinck and Ris. In order to compile Odonata database for Bengkulu, there have been conducted dragonfly surveys from two years ago at some representative sites in this province. Conservation area of Seluma in the southern Bengkulu was visited in 2019 for two weeks survey, while conservation area of Lemo Nakai was surveyed in 2020 for the same work duration. Random survey and continuous citizen science have been performed at Bengkulu City to further the database from human impacted area. Thirty-five species were recorded from Seluma, thirty-nine were from Lemo Nakai and ten species were observed to exist within the human impacted area in Bengkulu City. In total, there were total 52 dragonfly species recorded within the administ...

Apiary business with stingless bee at its core has shown progressive increment especially in West Sumatra. Therefore, to maximize the production of the stingless bee apiary, knowing detrimental predator or pest organisms as well as the way of managing them are essential. This article described potential predators and pests of stingless bee identified through rapid observation conducted on 14 April 2019 at a community apiary in Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra. There were 17 predators and pests identified, consist of six bird species, five odonate species and six ant species. The predation, competition and disadvantage possibly emerge from the existence of these organisms around stingless bee apiary are discussed, along with the feasible mitigation effort.

At Singkarak Lake, West Sumatra, a Brahminy Kite was observed repeatedly diving from 10-15 m in the air to snatch small fish from the surface of the water, and eating them in the air. The prey was probably Bilih Mystacoleucos padangensis , a fish species endemic to the lake. Only one fish was taken on each dive, so it was undoubtedly more energy-efficient to eat the prey on the wing than to take it to a perch after each capture, though potential kleptoparasitism by other raptors may have also selected for this feeding behaviour.

Its ecology remains poorly known, although it is characterised as an insectivorous lowland rainforest specialist occupying the mid-strata, usually recorded up to 500 m asl (BirdLife International 2001, Myers 2009). There are also suggestions that it is generally uncommon, rather patchily distributed, with a strong preference for primary forest habitat and highly sensitive to forest disturbance such as logging and fragmentation (Lambert 1992, BirdLife International 2001, Slik & van Balen 2005). Current records are heavily clustered in Borneo (particularly north Borneo), with only six published records from Sumatra, of which only two are post-1930 (BirdLife International 2001). Here we synthesise records of the Sumatran subspecies C. c. albiventer, including field reports from conservation/forestry organisa...

Abstract. Campus complex of Andalas University in Limau Manis site was erected at early 1990s and bordered directly with protected forest of Bukit Barisan chains. Gone along with its eco-friendly management system, Limau Manis complex has developed continuous greening effort which lead to the question: how far does this attempt influence avian community that live within campus environment. This study is conducted to compare some previous published works on forest area nearby the campus and in-campus sites, added with primary data gained through direct observation between July-October 2016 within the in-campus area. Shannon Wiener and evenness indices are in use to assess the condition of
