Philo of Alexandria's allegory of Hagar as secular education and Sarah as virtue achieves fame in... more Philo of Alexandria's allegory of Hagar as secular education and Sarah as virtue achieves fame in the Alexandrian Christian tradition. In fact, both Clement and Origen seem to opt for Philo's version instead of Paul's (Gal 4:21–31). Not until Didymus the Blind do we witness an attempt to harmonize the two allegories. This paper discusses the Philonic influence on Didymus, and seeks to outline and clarify his attempt to harmonize the Philonic and the Pauline.
