At the same time, the present research considers his remarks about art creation provided from his letters sent to Consorzio della Misericordia, which commissioned him the drawings of the tarsias for the choir of the church of Santa Maria in Bergamo. In this study Lorenzo Lotto comes to light as a painter deep interested in all steps concerning the project and the production of paintings. Indeed, many times Lotto refers to his own production of varnish and colours for oil painting, and in more than one occasion he complains of delay in which his patrons sent him their references about the development of his drawings.

In particular this research aims to clarify Ferro’s approach to some of the arguments debated by Lomazzo concerning several aspects of artistic creation, such as the most effective ways to represent the image of a religious figure, and the use of perspectival devices. Studying this copy the article also shows new information about Ferro’s personality: indeed some notes reveal he owned some prints which were part of the collection titled Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae, and he had a humanistic attitude, knowing the famous epic poem Gerusalemme liberata (1581) by Torquato Tasso.

As written in the introduction, the figures painted by Carlo Crivelli are not simple representations of people, but contain deep religious meanings. The second part of the article focuses on the importance of the technical process of gilding used in the Montefiore panels for the definition of the holy figures, and its significance for a more precise dating. In its third part, the paper suggests a new identification for the Franciscan saint painted in half length with St. Anthony of Padua; the final section looks into Crivelli’s mode of representing the holy bodies of St. Francis and, above all, of St. Louis of Toluse, who wears a ring in which the artist left a previously unnoticed inscription.

Following a diachronic order of his studies, the research underlines both his relationship with the rest of scholars of that time, examining unpublished sources, and his best discoveries, analyzing his publications. From the monography on Marco Palmezzano (1894) to direction of the specialized journal titled «Rassegna bibliografica dell’arte italiana» (1898-1916), the article defines his personality, who contributes to the period of the art history in which started the current features of the discipline, both about conservation and research studies.

The research aims to show that Lotto had a wide conception of this genre. For the artist the portrait is the rapresentation of the reality, but at the same time an image which represents the moral quality of the sitter. Indeed Lotto uses several forms: for example in some occasions he dresses up the sitter as a saint, or in other situations he adds a cover portrait, which could be both an allegory and a mirror. In general, this research contributes to define the huge artistic skills of Lotto during the last period of his life and production.
