Oktober 1943 wagten jüdische Gefangene den Aufstand und töteten dabei auch Niemann. Erst vor Kurzem wurden mehr als 350 Fotos und zusätzliche schriftliche Quellen aus seinem Besitz entdeckt. Die privat gesammelten und teilweise in zwei Alben zusammengestellten Bilder erlauben anhand der visuellen Überlieferung seiner Karriere ganz neue Einblicke zum Holocaust im deutsch besetzten Polen und zu den Krankenmorden der sogenannten Euthanasie, an denen Niemann beteiligt war. Der Edition dieser einzigartigen Sammlung stellen die Herausgeber eine umfassende historische Einordnung der Quellen zur Seite. Das Wissen zu der als „Aktion Reinhard“ bezeichneten Ermordung von etwa 1,8 Millionen Jüdinnen und Juden in den Todeslagern Sobibor, Belzec und Treblinka, die bis heute keinen angemessenen Platz in der gesellschaftlichen Erinnerung gefunden hat, wird durch die Niemann- Sammlung um wertvolle Erkenntnisse erweitert.
