From Max Weber's analysis (which associates the de-enchantment of the world with Protestantism) to the more recent, and extremely popular, approach of Roman Catholic 1 scholar, Brad Gregory (who presents modernity and secularization as the unintended consequence of the Protestant Reformation), the narrative is the same: at some point in 2 medieval or early modern history, the West took a momentous wrong turn, putting itself on the path to what we now call 'modernity', with all its attendant problems. In response 3 to this supposed 'wrong turn', there is a popular trend currently in the West, and particularly amongst Evangelicals, calling for a theology of "retrieval". The logic here is simple: given the crucial role played by Protestantism in the development of modernity and secularization, the way out must lie in a post-Protestant, or more accurately, a pre-Protestant metaphysic. Two important theologians representing this trend are James K. A. Smith and Hans Boersma. Smith, though mostly positive, engages also in a critical way with Radical Orthodoxy , stressing the importance of a Platonic or Neo-Platonic metaphysic of 4 participation. Specifically he considers "an ontological commitment to participation as the only proper metaphysical model for understanding creation, the Creator/creation relation in particular." Commenting on two of the main representatives of Radical Orthodoxy he 5 notes that "an important piece of Ward and Milbank's project is a reinvigorated Max Weber, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, trans. Δύο χαρακτηριστικοί θεολόγοι αυτής της τάσης είναι ο J. A. K. Smith και ο Hans Boersma. Σύμφωνα με τον Smith, "ένα 5 σημαντικό μέρος του εγχειρήματος των Ward και Milbank's είναι μία αναζωογονημένη μεταφυσική Ο όρος απέκτησε δημοφιλία μέσα από το έργο του Max Weber, The Protestant Ethic and the 1

In this paper we are approaching the issue through the juxtaposition and comparison of the three Mariological sermons of Nicholas Cabasilas, on the one hand, with Martin Luther’s Commentary on the Magnificat, on the other. The study of the two works side by side will bring to surface the theological presuppositions which explain the differences between the Eastern Orthodox and the Evangelical views. It will also help us identify some key points that need further discussion and clarification but also ways to reach a point of mutual agreement and understanding.
