jump to recentMy first thought this morning is that the rot had travailed deeper then I thought.
But the truth is that the whole thing was built with rotten wood. Built on stolen land. built with forced labor.
Most, if not all, progress that seems to have been made was just a facade, nailed to a rotten frame. And that facade is falling away revealing the rotten structure underneath.
Now I feel the only way to make true progress is to either tear down the whole thing and rebuild from scratch, or to gut it and replace the frame rotten stud, by rotten stud.
But I fear that those in the best position to make real change will only try to continue to nail the facade of progress back onto the rotting structure.
Either way, the most vulnerable among us are now more vulnerable and in more danger. We need to do what we can to support them. We need strengthen and build mutual aid networks, and strengthen an build support communities.
We are going to need them.
We need to leverage any privilege that we have to support those that are the most vulnerable.
Long post. Hopefully useful and practical tips from a late-id autist recovering from burnout.
It's helpful for me to think of autistic burnout as an extended period of being in an "energy deficit". (you are using more energy in a day then you get back for rest/recovery) To avoid burnout you need to, at the very least, be "energy neutral". To recover from burnout you need an extended period of an "energy surplus". (there can definitely be more things going on that contribute to burnout, but I think this is a good simple model to work with to start recovering)
Taking a break/vacation is good because you are getting some much needed rest, but if you return right back to the energy deficit environment, you will likely fall right back into burnout.
Finding long term strategies to reduce energy usage and increase rest/recovery is essential for burnout recovery. This can be hard because for autistic folks because, you know, all the reasons.
Going part time, or otherwise reducing the number of working hours is probably the most straight forward way to reduce energy load, but for some folks this will not be a feasible option.
Asking for accommodations at work is something else that can help reduce the energy load. You also don't need to disclose that you are autistic to ask for accommodations, although some might require documentation of an official diagnosis. But even if the law/regulations are on your side where you live, there is no guarantee that your work will grant the accommodations you request.
(Work from home, ANC headphones, sunglasses, reduced meetings, no video conference calls, quieter working area, etc.)
Finding a more neurodiversity friendly workplace may also be something to consider, especially if the above 2 options are not available to you. I know this is something that can be extremely difficult and energy expensive, especially for someone in autistic burnout where there is already an energy deficit. Using vacation or PTO time, or if you have enough money in reserve, quitting/going part time, could free up enough energy/time to look for other employment. Otherwise using other energy management strategies could build up enough of an "energy reserve" to allow you to look for other employment.
Don't let vacation/PTO/sick time go un-used. They are there to be used, so take as many mental health days that you safely can without jeopardizing you job.
The little one's pet snail was looking particularly photogenic while they were waiting for a habitat upgrade. 🐌

Completed a smaller #LeatherWorking project this past weekend.
I was wanting something to hold two saddle stitched notebooks and a pen while leaving them easily/quickly accessible.
One notebook 8.5 x 5.5 in (A5-ish size), and another 5.5 x 4.25 in (A6-ish size)
Here is what I came up with, including a spot for a small straightedge.
I'm really liking the look of it.
The leather is undyed vegtan, the notebooks are both hand made, and the straightedge was repurposed from an old metal square.
I'm planning on cutting the straightedge down to match the width of the holder.
With the new reply control logic that tobi has been working on coming in the next release of @gotosocial
I was thinking of how it might be able to be used to implement limiting instances and a slow federation mode.
So any servers on the limited list would only be able to like/boost posts, and only be able to reply/mention if there is an existing following relationship with the OP. Posts from limited servers wouldn't be boosted into timelines either. (Maybe the details could even be configurable by admins in a similar way to reply control)
In a slow federation mode, any instance not already on an existing block or allow list would automatically be treated as if they are on the limited list.
And when list subscriptions are implemented, you could do something like keep federation open, but automatically block servers on an 80% consensus list, and limit servers on a 40% list, with any local list overriding any subscription.
Not sure how viable any of this would actually be, or if it would be compatible with what the gts devs might already have planned for a limited/slow federation mode. Just an idea I've been thinking about.
Good morning fedi. Feeling like it's going to be one of those days.
"I'm coming from a place of recognizing that they can sometimes appear bored or distracted, or might respond to something in a way that seems curt and annoyed."
I would say that the advice is potentially helpful.
But instead of the advice coming from a place on how others perceive them, have the advice come from an understanding that they have the autonomy to decide to who, when, and how they disclose that information.
There unfortunately can be risks to disclosing, and they would probably be in the best position to determine how high the risk is. And, if needed, they can also ask for accommodations without disclosing.
Had a weird recurring dream last night.
The network interfaces on the banana at work were down. 🍌 (4 x 1G rj45 ethernet ports)
Was able to get a console on it and get some information on ports 2 and 4 (MAC and configured IP) but the rest of the info was just a garbled mess. I'm thinking it was a hardware issue because the ports were just cat6 cables pushed into a banana. (and it was just a banana)
Anyway, still recovering from being sick over the weekend. Covid tests all coming out negative, but still planning on isolating and working from home this week. Also accidentally took DayQuil instead of NyQuil before going to bed last night, so not too surprised that dreams are kind of funky right now.
Also the meta on fedi has been kinda disappointing the past few days. (might post some thoughts on that later)
Hope everyone is able to set some time aside to take care of themselves. And remember to try and be kind, and not be dismissive, to people going through tough times. And give people a little leeway on how they express themselves when they are in distress, or actively being attacked.

Root cause analysis:
#CrowdStrike integrated "AI technology" into its product to identify and close security vulnerabilities.
CrowdStrikeAI™️ found that the most vulnerable component was Windows.
CrowdStrikeAI™️ closed that vulnerability.
Anyone else have one of those little galvanized swimming pools growing up?
Or is this something that was just a localized thing? Both my wife and I had one growing up. (Midwest city US)
