Leila El-Wakil
Associate Professor at the University of Geneva, Leïla el-Wakil has been trained both as an architect (Ecole d’Architecture de l’Université de Genève, 1979) and as a historian of art (PhD in Humanities, University of Geneva, 1986). Benefiting from these twofold competencies, she has developed an original scientific competence in history of architecture, focusing on the XIXth and XXth century constructions, as well as in questions dealing with heritage conservation.
She extended her research field to Egyptian and Arab modern, but also vernacular architecture. She has been involved in a European project dealing with the interrelations between Western and non-Western architecture, with particular interest in the Arab world. She was in charge of the Salon Suisse with the project Wake up! A path towards better architecture at the 2016 Venice Biennale. Her research and teaching have been rewarded by prizes, among which the Prix Ador for the Magister dissertation and the Best Teaching Award (2012).
She published plenty of articles and books on Swiss architecture, among them, Bâtir la campagne. Genève 1800-1860, (2 vol., Genève, Georg, 1988-1989), Léman 1900. Morceaux choisis d’architecture (Genève, Georg, 1992), Genève 1896. Regards sur une Exposition Nationale (Genève, Georg, 1998), Paris-Lyon-Genève. Relations artistiques, réseaux, influences, voyages (Genève, Georg, 2004), Patrimoine genevois. Etat des lieux (Genève, Georg, 2007), Hassan Fathy dans son temps (Gollion, Paris, InFolio, 2013), translated to English Hassan Fathy, an architectural life (Cairo, AUCPress, 2018).
Besides her academic carrier, Leïla el-Wakil is actively engaged in heritage conservation. She teaches various programs, belongs to the scientific committee of the Master of advanced Studies in Heritage conservation and Museology of the University of Geneva, and is collaborating with the Heritage Offices in Switzerland and France. Founding-member of the association Save the Heritage of Hassan Fathy, she worked closely with the UNESCO in order to safeguard the village of New Gourna (Egypt).
