Spirituality, religion, and meaning-giving are resources and means that help individuals cope with adverse life events and circumstances. Thinking about resilience should therefore include spirituality. In this chapter, this position is substantiated by a reflection on resilience and on an innovative concept of positive health, based in part on Antonovsky’s salutogenic approach, especially the construct of a sense of coherence. The concept of positive health involves six dimensions depicted in a six-pointed spider’s web. Especially important is that a spiritual/existential dimension is included in this dynamic concept of health, which is defined as the ability to adapt and to self-manage. The concept is illustrated with an uncomplicated, everyday case vignette. Subsequently, the meaning-making process and the available empirical evidence are discussed in more detail. The m...

Most important, the Executive committee of the WPA accepted the latest proposal for a Position Statement on Spirituality and Religion in Psychiatry. This is really a great accomplishment. In other editions of this Newsletter the course of the discussion has been explained. The accepted text will be published in the next issue of World Psychiatry (February 2016). You will find the text in the next paragraph of this Newsletter. After the memorable international conference on Psychiatry and Religious Experience in Ávila, Spain (November 2010) we were waiting for a worthy follow up. The leadership of the Section managed to organize a two and a half days symposium as a special track on Spirituality and Mental Health during the annual meeting of the Brazilian Congress of Psychiatry. A report on this major event is published here. And a new event is coming up: A WPA international congress in Cape To...

This remarkable event remained unnoticed in the Netherlands. AIM: To bring this statement to the attention of the Dutch psychiatry. METHOD: An explanation of the criteria on which the statement is based. RESULTS: Religion and spirituality are a part of daily psychiatric practice, scientific research, residency training and continuous medical education. CONCLUSION: The Executive Commitee of the World Psychiatric Association has made a major accomplishment in favour of psychiatric practice around the world.

The boundary between religion (and spirituality) and the practice of psychiatry is becoming increasingly porous. No longer can psychiatrists in a multifaith, multi-cultural, globalized world hide behind the dismissal of religious belief as pathological, or behind biomedical scientism. Consequently, there is a far more important reason for engaging in ‘Religion and Science’ than the outdated conflicts. That reason would be the persistence of (religious and scientific) superstition and nonsense.

The academic study of religion and mental health is rapidly growing across the world; alongside this there is increasing interest in the role of spirituality in health services provision. This is not limited to western spirituality; there is increasing attention given to non-Christian spiritualities. As one example a major conference organised by BME Health in London focused on the social, anthropological and psychological aspects of spirit possession in Islam and was well attended with 160 delegates. Another recent conference run by the BPPA (British Pakistani Psychiatric Association) devoted considerable time to discussing the relationship between Islam and mental health including one outstanding talk by an ex terrorist on the religious factors causing him to leave the terrorist organization. At a time when mental health services across the globe are suffering from financial cuts and undergoing a process of increasing beaurocratisation, it app...
