Unclear whether one should use .describe(_optimized)_plan() or .explain()

Description

This page lists .describe_plan() and .describe_optimized_plan() (among other methods) but those are the only ones in the list that don't have their own reference page. At the same time, .explain() has its own reference page but is not present in the list mentioned above.

It seems there is some overlap between those three functions in terms of functionalities, but it isn't clear to me which one should be preferred.
