This thesis uses Johan Galtung’s typology of violence, Vamik Volkan’s theory of group identity and patterns of glorifying chosen victories and traumas and understanding of our stream of consciousness through the Insight Approach of Kenneth Melchin and Cheryl Picard to examine the various elements often mentioned of the explain the lack of educational attainment by Protestant working class males.

I use the term “the troubles” to refer to the period from the civil disorder in 1969 to signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
