Alexander Paul Roper
Griffith University, Department of Tourism, Leisure, Hotel and Sport Management, Doctor of Philosophy
Graduating with a BA Hons (Combined) from the University of Liverpool and a MA Hons from the University of Warwick, Alexander worked as a sports consultant in the United Kingdom, Europe and Southeast Asia before moving to Australia and, ultimately, further graduate study.
Alexander's most recent research work has centred upon the socio-historical and socio-political role of sport in Southeast Asia - with a specific and particular interest in Malaysia. Indeed, it is here that Alexander has, as of late, spent a prolonged period of time, interviewing key stakeholders on the role of sport in the country's ongoing nation-building project.
Alexander also specialises in sport and politics; sports history and culture; sports education and physical education; the study of association football; and the economics and business of sport.
In this last field - the economics and business of sport - Alexander worked as principal lecturer and course-coordinator at the University of Queensland's School of Human Movement Studies.
Teaching at both undergraduate (HMST 3103) and post-graduate level (HMST 7113), Alexander worked in close conjunction with a large number of Queensland’s sport organisations – organising placements, situating the students within these organisations, assisting with organising events, sponsorship and funding.
In writing the courses, Alexander engaged in prolonged and wide-ranging discussions with said local sports organisations so as to: (1) ascertain weaknesses in graduate students' education for south-east Queensland's sports organisations;(2) to find out what these organisations wanted from their prospective employees; (3) to make sure the courses that were provided for the students would meet these needs; something which would in turn (4) markedly improve the students chances of securing employment on or before graduation - something which was to occur on a number of different occasions throughout Alexander's time at the University of Queensland.
Aside from the sports business courses, Alexander also guest-lectured for offerings outside of this field at the University of Queensland, such as the School of Human Movement’s HMST 2190 course (which deals with sport’s socio-cultural aspects). A recipient of the School’s inaugural award for excellence in tutoring, Alexander tutored heavily in the HMST 2190 course and also in another of the School’s socio-cultural offerings – HMST 1910.
In addition to these courses, Alexander was also very heavily involved in SPCG 7000 “Contemporary Issues in Coaching”. This was an on-line, post-graduate course ran in conjunction with the Australian Sport Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport. Working almost exclusively with elite athletes and coaches (including Olympic gold medallists, world champions and Premier winning athletes), Alexander was tasked with providing guidance, advice and feedback on the student's work.
In terms of academic rather than consultancy roles (and away from Griffith University), Alexander has also undertaken work for the University of Southern Queensland’s Faculty of Education. Courses Alexander has been involved with in this capacity include, EDC 1100 Lifespan Development and Learning; EDC1200. Self, Education and Society; EDC1300. Perspectives in Education; EDC1400. Foundations of Curriculum and Pedagogy; EDC2100. Managing Supportive Learning Environments; EDC4000. Professional Placement and Portfolio; EDH1150. Socio-cultural Foundations of Sport and Physical Activity; EDU5704. Popular Culture as Curriculum and Pedagogy; and EDX 2190. Australian History and Society: Curriculum and Pedagogy.
A qualified teacher, Alexander has taught HPE and SOSE at the Gold Coast's two most prestigious school's - St Hilda's and the Southport School. He is a member of the Queensland College of Teachers and the Sports Management Association of Australia and New Zealand. An Executive Member of the Institute of Sport Management, Alexander is also the Director of the Australasian Sport Consultancy Group (www.australasiasport.com).
Published in Asia, Europe, North America and Australia, examples of Alexander's work can be accessed via links on this page.
