Awarded a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the Cajal Institute (Spanish Research Council), he has taught under- and postgraduate levels for 26 years including periods in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Alicante), and Germany (Leipzig). Having published over 40 articles in scientific journals with more than 700 citations, and 30 book chapters, he has also been co-editor of 5 books. He is Editor for Special Issues for Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, Frontiers in Cellular Neurosciences, and Journal of Immunology Research, as well as a Review Editor for Frontiers in Aging Neurosciences, and expert reviewer for 22 international journals (indexed in JCR). Currently Vice-President of the Sociedad Mexicana de Biología del Desarrollo and Sociedad Mexicana de Ciencias Fisiológicas, his main research interests lie in elucidating the molecular mechanisms that regulate gene expression during the differentiation of precursor cells in the central nervous system, alongside building knowledge of the molecular mechanisms involved in aging and various neurodegenerative pathologies, such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis.
