The argument is put forward that, from a perspective of symbolic interactionism, in order to adequately make assertions regarding video material it is necessary to use video itself as a key statement in scientific discourse

An ASF is understood as a short film of about 2–3 min length together with an explanatory text (Complementary Information) that shows a specific perspective on videotaped classroom praxis. In the seminar, students created ASFs from their subjective perspective on good music teaching as well as from a theoretical perspective. Central findings of the accompanying research indicate that the usage of the method increases the students’ abilities to reason on a scientific basis and improves their levels of reflection (Roters, 2012). Instrumental or vocal teaching in music schools and general music education in compulsory schools... more Instrumental or vocal teaching in music schools and general music education in compulsory schools represents primary elements of German music education. Both directions are combined on a professional basis by string, wind, singing or band classes. Music pedagogical theories describing instrumental teaching and school music, respectively, have evolved differently in the past - a fact that is scarcely addressed in the literature. In this article both problem-centered interview and video-assisted thought- reconstruction techniques are employed to use differences in the corresponding theories for building empirically grounded explanations of string classes. Major findings indicate that the instrumental teacher's background in traditional teaching structures strongly influences the realization of certain characteristics of aesthetic practice.

Summary: Discourse in (intercultural) music education recently often refers to a meaning-oriented view on culture, especially to a notion of culture focussing on processes of the assignment of meanings (Barth, 2008). A praxeological perspective on culture that also introduces a variation of this meaning-oriented view remains relatively unregarded hitherto. This perspective can lead to a shift in the view upon music teaching in classrooms: Cultural differences thus appear less as relations between familiar and strange cultures but as overlaps of different cultural ,pieces’ that are processed in classroom practices in situ. The herein presented study shows selected analyses of such music-related cultural differences in two music lessons on video. In doing this, on the one hand different types of music-related cultural pieces can be described. On the other hand, meanings of overlappings of those pieces in the context of the whole lesson are highlighted.
