Two Delegations of British Architects in the Soviet Union: Professional Contacts between British and Soviet Architects at the Beginning of the Khrushchev Thaw, 2021
Professional contacts between Soviet and foreign architects remain a poorly studied area in domes... more Professional contacts between Soviet and foreign architects remain a poorly studied area in domestic and foreign art history. At the same time, the extensive work that has been going on in recent decades in the field of studying the activities of All-Union Society for Cultural Relations (VOKS) and Soviet cultural international politics [7; 2; 4; 10; 14; 19], and also a discussion about the specifics and role of the Soviet architectural practice of the 1930-1950s [5; 20], prompts to look at this plot with special attention. After all, the reasons, circumstances, and the very nature of professional communication between the Russian architects and their foreign colleagues help us to assess the peculiarities of the development of the Russian architectural school more objectively. In this article, we continue the conversation about the professional communication between Soviet and British architects, highlighting the period of the "thaw" as an important stage in the history of these relations. In this study the trips of British architects to USSR which took place in 1953 and 1955 are reviewed. As S. V. Ward noticed in his profound study of British planning movement's Soviet connections «duality between rational learning and culturally constructed imagining is thrown into exceptionally sharp relief when studying Western encounters with the USSR» [20, p. 500]. Although some British architects considered the possibility of coming to the USSR in the hope of getting a commission, the majority arrived more out of curiosity. The shortcomings of the building infrastructure and the poverty of everyday life left an imprint on their perception of the new experimental architecture, causing skepticism and preventing the Soviet side from producing the experience it had hoped for by hosting foreign guests. However, in the 1940s, the context of the perception of the Soviet art has changed. During the years of the Anglo-Soviet Alliance (1941-45), the sympathy for Russia appeared in Britain, which could even be called "unprecedented enthusiasm" [12, p. 253]. The exhibitions dedicated to Russia, the Eastern Front, and Anglo-Soviet friendship were held (Erno Goldfinger took part in their organization 2), while the British people collected gifts for the Soviet people (Mrs. Clementine Churchill did this personally). The characteristic of the avant-garde utopian projects would be incomplete without considering the perception of modernism not only by the functionalists, but also by their opponents and by the general public – who supposed to be the main acceptors of all the radical changes. Another aspect to be observed in frames of this subject is the review of relationships between schools of traditionalism and functionalism schools during the period of 1920-1930-s.

A lot of professionals had to leave the country due to social cataclysms. The aim of the paper is to draw up as much as possible a complete picture of the emigration of architects from Russia to Italy, France, and Great Britain, analyzing the circumstances of the emigration and the further careers of those architects and describing the heritage they left, as well as to estimate their place and role in the history of architecture.

London Architectural Association was one of the most influential architecture schools in the second part of the XXth century. First is because its radical change in the pedagogical process in 1960-s and unprecedented interest to the problems of architecture evolution and contemporary urban development. Among the students and teachers of AA were many other outstanding authors. Moshaven Mostafavi, who graduated from AA in 1976, took an active part in preparing the new studying courses. Together with his students Mostafavi researched the opportunities for reprogramming of historical urban environment, looking for the new routes for contemporary architecture in frames of European cities.

One of the most exciting pages of it’s history deals with the period of 1960-1980-s, when Alvyn Boyarsky has become AA’ director and the school becomes a real experimental field of the post-reconstruction generation, bringing up today’s world architecture leaders. Architects graduated from the Association have become the true heroes of contemporary architecture. Their practice may appear to be very different, but they are all representatives of one school and, in some general way, one generation. The new generation was inspirited with a special artistic sensibility to the historical urban context, architectural genealogy and the complexity of human everyday life in general. The number of questions raised up during that period is still related to the most urgent problems of contemporary urban development. The article is a study of AA’ educational methods and programs, focusing on the main research themes, best diploma studies, additional activities. Education for Boyarski was a way to create an environment for experimentation and critical thinkng, so he supported any student undertaking - from costumed carnivals and elephant riding to music records and student magazines. The essay is devoted to the history of the London Architectural Association of the 1960s-1980s, the urban problems faced by the generation that succeeded the generation of the postwar Reconstruction, and the methods of teaching developed during these years under the leadership of Alvin Boyarski.
