The inversion of standardly accepted images, expressions and perceptions of what is aesthetically... more The inversion of standardly accepted images, expressions and perceptions of what is aesthetically pleasing and suitable dominates the work of Romeo Castellucci in its entirety. In his hands, images are a powerful, sometimes cruel tool for the projection of non-visible representations into the domain of the visible. These images are generated internally, endo-genetically; they become flames which seek their way out and their completion in the real world. The beautiful, unreachable idols are overthrown and reduced to their real dimensions. The archetypal figures are reflected in in inconceivable ways on the actors' own bodies. Colour, matter as well as sound have their own major impact on the result of the creative process. And all is covered by the veil of the remote and the supernatural.

Ancient Greek art has diachronically been a source of creational inspiration for European artists... more Ancient Greek art has diachronically been a source of creational inspiration for European artists. The deceased appears as a hero, as required by the classical ideal, and his/her death as a natural progression. This aesthetic vision helped shaping the newer cemeteries in Europe. The funerary monuments of some cemeteries in Greece, from the 19th century, reflect this idea and prove that there is a link between Greek antiquity and modern Greek art. The Cemetery of Anastasis in Eugenia Drapetsona region was the New Cemetery of Piraeus in the early 20th century. The influence of classical antiquity is reflected in the funerary sculptures, especially in iconographic themes, allegorical figures, motifs and symbols. Some of them, such as the iconographic theme of the bull, obviously come from the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos. The winged cupids are allegorical forms, which usually depict winged angels. Some human figures are depicted in certain archetypes, such as the male athlete with a bare and robust body, since the shift to the classical patterns of idealized beauty made nakedness respected and acceptable even for displaying angels in Christian funerary monuments. The acanthus leaves and rosettes are some other relevant themes, which date back to antiquity too. Except for the iconographic themes, some monuments have a direct connection to Greek antiquity. These are pedimented funerary steles with reliefs, which imitate steles of the 4th century BC, large funerary architectural constructions or some marble sarcophagi. Furthermore, in the Cemetery of Anastasis there are two monuments that imitate the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates. Lekythoi and amphorae, as funerary reliefs or sculptures, are also quite common in the Cemetery. Last but not least, particularly interesting is the fact that classical elements that refer to ancient Greek monuments are combined with the powerful symbol of Christianity, the cross.

people and communities, are places of historical remembrance
and significant witnesses to local history. However, their abundant
written and artistic testimonies often remain obscure, primarily
due to the association of these sites with death and decay. The
Anastasis Cemetery (“Cemetery of Resurrection”) in the Evgenia
Drapetsona area of Piraeus is a noteworthy case. Numerous
funerary monuments attest to the presence of prominent families
from Piraeus, who have contributed to the historical development
and shaping of the city's identity. The purpose of this article is
twofold: first, to highlight the "voices" of the cemetery audience
regarding the sepulchral heritage of Piraeus, focusing on its
preservation, enhancement, and utilisation; and second, to
suggest ways for the transformation and cultural revitalisation of
the burial site, primarily through cultural routes and various
activities.
Design/methodology/approach - To study the attitudes and
opinions of the audience at the Anastasis Cemetery, an online
survey was conducted over approximately one year. This digital
approach proved effective, resulting in a considerable number of
completed questionnaires. Participants from municipalities in
Attica were invited to engage, provided they had prior familiarity
with the Cemetery and had visited it at least once. In total, the
survey engaged 104 participants.
Findings - The research highlighted the participants' attitudes
and opinions on issues related to the use of the burial site, as well
as its educational and cultural utilisation through activities, art
exhibitions, lectures, tours, and workshops, while always
considering its primary function and users. Additionally, it
identifies ways in which the audience could contribute to the
management of the burial site.
Originality/value - This research introduces, for the first time,
the issue of showcasing and utilizing Greek funerary heritage,
examining the "voices" of the cemetery audience, which
constitutes the users of the space.

It emerged as an audience category, comprising 26 out of 214 survey participants, in a four-month online audience research regarding two Athenian cemeteries. The basic argument for the scope of this research is that in highly contested public spaces such as the Third and the Anastasis cemetery, which reflect some of the most striking abnormalities of Greece’s unequal cemetery system, ‘others’ are systematically constructed and are not co-included in ordered, face-to-face representation. Thus, we emphasise the digital form of this research as more resourceful when exploring silenced voices and invisible presences. We discuss the integral taxonomies of the ‘Other’ on the basis of the dialectic character of the place. Finally, in order to negotiate otherness as an identity marker, we focus on the opinions of the ‘Other’ audience regarding spatial practices, attitudes and emotions related to the space of the dead.
