The system, composed of general-purpose hardware units, operates in a block mode. Contiguous blocks of digitized bursts are recorded and processed by spectral methods in the host computer. This strategy has been found to overcome conflicting goals usually sought in measurement practice: high data rate typical for counters, robust detection and high accuracy of individual frequency estimates for low quality signals and flexibility that facilitates further modifications and comparison tests.

The model builds upon existing theory and available experimental data to account for the principal factors that influence light extinction in participating media, including wavelength, primary particle size distribution and morphological structure of particle aggregation as well as multiple scattering among particles within a particle aggregation. Good agreement is demonstrated between the model predictions and experimental data in the visible and IR ranges. The model illustrates that as the mean particle size increases, the integral optical property of a soot cloud approaches that of monodisperse particles. It is postulated in the current study that the number of particles participating in multiple scattering is around 20 regardless of the real size of particle aggregation.

The model includes two parameters which are adjusted for best fit at normal incidence. Using the same parameter values, it is found that predictions of the variation of transmitted waveforms with angle through two types of bone replica are in reasonable agreement with data despite the fact that scattering is not included in the theory.
