This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to examine the care seeking determinants of adolescents accessing the adolescent friendly services at the Action Health Incorporated Adolescent Clinic in Lagos, Nigeria. A structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to elicit information about demographics; past medical history; family history; reproductive/sexual history. The study was explained to the adolescents and their consent was obtained before interviewing them. Data analysis was done using SPSS Version 15. A multiple logistic regression was used to model the relationship between client facility-use status and selected individual characteristics. ABSTRACT Objective Determine the prevalence of HIV testing among young people and its implication... more ABSTRACT Objective Determine the prevalence of HIV testing among young people and its implications for sexual and reproductive health behaviour. Methods This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data was generated through a face-to-face interview of 6,081 male and female youths attending Action Health Incorporated youth-friendly clinic, Lagos and analyzed using SPSS version 15 for windows. The outcome measure was self-reported ever had an HIV testing which was coded ‘yes or no’. Categorical variables were summarized using frequencies while numeric data were described using means and standard deviations (SD). Results The majority (95.2%) were still in school as compared with only 4.8% out of school facility users. The mean age of the young people was 16.15 ± 2.384SD. A high proportion (74.5%) of the young people reported not sexually active. Only 25.5% of the never married youths reported to have ever had sexual intercourse. The mean age of first sexual initiation was 15.3 ± 2.904SD. Only 13.1% of the youths have ever had reproductive tract infections while overall, the prevalence of HIV testing among never-married youths was 1.0%. Overall, never-married youths with reproductive tract infections (1.8%) were significantly more likely to report HIV testing than those with no reproductive tract infections (0.9%); p= 0.015. Never-married youths who have had sexual intercourse (2.8%) were more likely to have undergone a HIV test than those who have never engaged in sexual intercourse (0.7%); p= 0.000. Conclusion The study shows that the prevalence of HIV testing among young people attending the clinic was very low. Implicit in the study was also the fact that only young people who have had sexual intercourse and those with reproductive tract infections are likely to undergo an HIV test.
