The legend of First Monkey

Many years ago, there was a king and queen who lived in Mindanao. They were not liked by
their people. The king was cruel and the queen was greedy.
The king collected a lot of money from his people and gave it to the queen. The queen bought
expensive food, wine and clothes from all over the world and kept them in the palace.

One day, the king gave a party in the palace garden. There were six tables placed in the shade of
some tall trees. Next to the trees, there was a large pond with goldfish in it.
Soon the guests arrived and everybody started eating and enjoying themselves. Suddenly, an old
woman entered the garden. No one knew where she came from. She approached each table and
begged for food. No one gave her any and the king told his guest to chase her away.

Your Majesty, please have pity on me! I am an old man. I havent eaten any food for several
days.
The queen, who was sitting next to the king became angry. Go away, old woman! she shouted.
Who asked you to come here? This party is for rich and important people.

The king roared with laughter. He banged the table with spoon.
Chase her away! he cried. Everyone started beating her with their spoon. They chased the poor
old woman all over the palace garden, suddenly, there was a great crash of thunder and a bright
flash lightning. The old woman changed into a beautiful girl.

You are not human beings, she said You are all so cruel. None of you wanted to help me.
Because of this, I shall change you into monkeys.

She clapped her hands. Immediately, the spoon turned into tails and fixed themselves on the
backs of the king, queen and their guests. The beautiful clothes which they were wearing turned
into long hair. Their fingers and toes grew longer. When they tried to speak, they could chatter
only like monkeys.

They ran back to the palace but the kings guards chased them away, and threw stones at them.
Go away, you dirty little things! the guards shouted. This is the king palace.

As they had nowhere to go. They hid in the forest and hills where they have ever since.

The Monkey and The Bird

Once there was a monkey. This monkey had very bad behaviour. He was lazy, greedy. Everyday
he used to steal some food from other people. Even, although he had some he still did it and kept
the stolen food in other place in order not to be seen. He did this because he was afraid when
somebody else asked for some. Yes he was very mean. "I must add a little more so that I have a
lot of food to eat", he said to himself. The food in the island where he lived was getting less and
less so that he decided to cross the sea to find other island.

The following day he made a rowing boat. He cut some wood from the forest and began to make
it. It was such a hard wood that he didn't intend to continue because he was lazy. Then, he tried to
find some other wood. This time lie had very soft wood. It made him easy to finish his job. When
the rowing boat had been ready, suddenly there was a wood pecker bird flew toward him and
stood on the rowing boat. "Hi ... friend where are you going to go ... you look so busy to make a
boat", the wood pecker asked. "I am going to sail to find other island the food here was getting
more and more difficult to get, you may take a part in sailing, because I had enough food on
boat", the monkey said. "Ok ... I'll go with you", the bird replied.

Soon they pulled the boat to the coast and loaded the monkeys luggage and food on the boat.
The loyal bird also helped the monkey. "We will find a new word, new food and new green land
full of food!" the monkey said. "Yes I agree with you", the bird added. Before sailing, they had a
deal. "The one who rows is allowed to eat because it is a heavy duty job, while the one in the
front is not!" the monkey said boastfully.

The bird was not able to row so that it seemed loose then it became a captain in the front of the
boat without enjoying the food.

The monkey didn't realize that the wood pecker bird knew the cruel intention of the monkey. The
bird was disappointed.

"Damn you bad monkey ...!" the bird said to himself.

Then the bird pecked the front part of the boat. It could do it easily because the wood was so soft.
In a short time the boat began to sink.

The monkey didn't know it because he enjoyed eating the food while rowing the boat. Suddenly
there was a lot of water in the boat. It made the monkey so shocked that he jumped into the sea
and swam difficultly to the closest island. The bird, certainly, flew away to leave him.
When he reached an island, he still never take a hint from his experience. He was still stubborn.
This time he was so hungry that he was very delighted to see a cashew-fruit tree. It was full of
fruits.

Later, the hungry monkey climbed up the cashew-fruit tree impatiently. The cashews looked ripe
and delicious. He had counted all cashews on that tree before he ate them. No body was allowed
to pick.

Some birds were coming to the tree because they liked the cashew fruits very much. They asked
the monkey for the cashews but he certainly didn't permit to take and ordered the birds to look
for in another island. Also, there was an owl flew toward the tree the owl wanted some fruits too
but the monkey stopped and asked, "Why are you here?". "Can you share the cashews with me?"
the owl asked the monkey. "Well you may take them if you can sing beautiful song", the monkey
said. The bird began to sing but it was not a good song. The owl sang badly. It was impossible
for an owl to sing beautifully. The monkey finally instructed the bird to go far away from the
tree.

One day a canary came and asked for the something. "Hey, the kind monkey ... could you share
the cashew with me?" the bird said dearly to persuade him. "Well you must sing for me nicely,
first". the monkey replied.

The little bird now started to sing. It was such a nice song that the monkey fell asleep. What
happened then? The monkey, obviously fell from the high tree and broke his legs. He was
wounded seriously and couldn't walk anymore. All the birds in the island came again to eat and
enjoy the delicious cashew fruits but the monkey did nothing. He only blamed himself and
finally realized his mistakes.

The Snake and The Frog

Long long time ago in the forest, there lived a snake. The snake was big but old and weak. He
was always in hunger during the day, because he was not able to catch his prey anymore.
Oneday, he hitched hike to get his food and arrived in a pond full of frogs, his delicious and
favourite food.

"Ehm ... they look so delicious", he said to him self. "I hope I can get them for the meal", he
thought. When the old snake came closer, the frogs fleet into the thick forest. The snake was so
sad, he was getting more hungry because he hadn't got any food that day. "I must find the way to
catch them, they are too fast for me", he said. Then the snake was lying moveless and pretended
to be dead.

"Look! the dangerous snake doesn't try to chase after us, perhaps he was dead, let's see!" the
prince of the frog said. "Don't! don't do that my son, he will swallow you, he may be not dead.
He is only sleeping!" the queen of the frog said.

But the prince didn't care of his mother's saying. He then approached the snake. Knowing that
the snake kept being moveless, the prince frog came closer bravely. But when the snake opened
the eye, the frog was frightened and jumped off.

"Don't be afraid little frog, I will not hurt you", the snake said. "I bit a son of a meditating man
once, the prayer was very angry and cursed me, he told me that I had to serve every frog in the
world and had to carry them anywhere they wanted", the snake added.

"Was it right?" the stupid prince asked but trusted him then. "Yes that's right, prince", the snake
replied in a low voice. "I am the servant of your honour, please, you can get on my back". The
prince then got on the tricky snake's back. "Take me to the palace of ours" the prince frog
instructed.

"Get off the snake's back!" the queen shouted. "Don't worry my mother, this snake will not hurt
me", the prince said to his mother.

"If so, how happy we are to have a ride", the king and the queen said. The mouth of the big old
snake became wet to think about delicious fat frog riding on his back. But he realised that he had
to be patient to wait a good time to eat.

The snake took the kings frog and family to go in and out of the forest for several days. But one
day the snake suddenly stopped on the way. "What's the matter?", the prince asked the snake,
"Why do you stop?" "I haven't bad the meal for several days so that I feel very weak now", the
snake said sadly.

"Would you permit me to swallow several frogs?", the snake asked.

"How can I permit you to eat my people!", the king frog asked him, puzzled. "If you don't allow
me to eat I am going to die and you have no one to take around", the snake persuaded. "If that is
the case, you may take some of them for your meal", the king said. The hungry snake began to
swallow the frogs one by one. It made him stronger and stronger.

One day the snake went around the pond to find some frog but he didn't get a single one. He,
then went to see the king and told the king. "No more frog left in the pond, your honour!"

"Is it right?", the king asked him surprisingly. "Yes, it is right, and I am hungry again now. "I
have eaten all frogs in this pond", the snake said, and this is your turn now".

"What!, how brave you are to eat me. I am the king of the frogs!" shouted the king frog. The
snake, however, cared him no more, nothing scared against the three frogs. He immediately
grabbed them all, the king, the queen and the small prince frog.

lying beneath a tree. Both pounced upon it and caught the loaf at the same time. It ismine. I saw
it first, claimed one cat. While the other said, I pounced upon it first and so it belongs to me.
After having fought for a while, one cat said, Let us divide it into two and takeone piece each.
Indeed, a good idea, said the other cat. But how do we divide it now?
A monkey sitting on the branch of the tree had watched all that happened between the two cats.
That loaf of bread looks good. I could do with it myself, he thought. Slowly he came down
from the tree and walked up to the confused cats.

Yes, my dear friends! Can I help you? asked the monkey. The cats told the monkey what the
problem was and said, Why do not you be the judge between us? When the monkey
nodded, the cats said, Please divide this loaf for us.

The clever monkey smilingly broke the bread into two pieces. But one piece was a little bigger
that the other. OH no! I will take a little bite of this bigger piece to make both equal, said the
monkey, slyly. He took a bite from the bigger piece. But, he had taken a big bite. Uh oh! Now it
has become smaller than the other piece. I will just have to take a little bite from this piece now,
said the clever monkey.

The Judge Monkey took another bite. The two cats sat in front of the monkey, seeing the loaf of
bread they had found getting smaller and smaller. When the whole loaf was eaten by the monkey,
the monkey said, I am sorry. I was really difficult to divide that loaf. I must be going now. And
the monkey jumped onto the tree and was gone. If only we had not quarreled among ourselves,
we would have remained united and we need not have to go to the monkey and to become

the hillside was a little house in which lived an old woman and her grandson.

The old woman, who was very industrious, earned their living by removing the seeds from
cotton and a long stick that she used for a spindle. The boy was lazy and would not do anything
to help his grandmother, but every day went down to the town and gambled.

Oone day, when he had been losing money, the boy went home and was cross because his supper
was not ready.

"I am hurrying to get the seeds out of this cotton," said the grandmother, "and as soon as I sell it,
I will buy us some food."

At this the boy fell into a rage, and he picked up some coconut shells and threw them at his
grandmother. Then she became angry and began to whip him with her spindle, when suddenly he
was changed into an ugly animal, and the cotton became hair which covered his body, while the
stick itself became his tail.

As soon as the boy found that he had become an ugly creature he ran down into the town and
began whipping his companions, the gamblers, with his tail, and immediately they were turned
into animals like himself.

Then the people would no longer have them in the town, but drove them out. They went to the
forest where they lived in the trees, and ever since they have been known as monkeys.
