The idea of the gradual decline of the world and the coming end of the world is replaced by the dominance of the idea of gradual progress and movement towards future prosperity. The concept of the influence of planets and numbers on human health and life also faded into the background. The tradition of descriptions aimed at progress and the ac- quisition of new knowledge about the world can be identified in various types of sources - county histories, utopian narratives, etc. This article discusses a lesser-known type, which is educational board games, which flourished in England at the end of the 18th - first half of the 19th centuries. Symbolic numerical values and the perception of movement across the playing field as a spiritual ascent were replaced by the idea of competition, learning and personal progress. Geographic educational games introduced the features of the topographic structure of Britain and the world, putting ideological overtones into its description. We can see this both in historical games and in games “in human life”. Using the example of edu- cational games of the late 18th century, the article shows the temporal characteristics ac- quired by children and youth due to the immersive nature of the game process, when almost every phenomenon presented in the game requires a certain action from the player.

The first authors to publish such works were William Lambard and William Camden, who saw their task in describing space by incorporating temporal characteristics into it, in the search for past evidence confirming the legitimacy of contemporary land holdings. Classical authors were authorities for them and other antiquarians. Their works served as a source of true knowledge, although they may require some adjustments. At the beginning of the 17th century, the idea of the superiority of the past and the gradual withering of the present began to be challenged by such close associates of Queen Elizabeth and James I as W. Gilbert and F. Bacon, who proclaimed the idea of increasing knowledge and future prosperity. In the descriptions of the counties by such followers of F. Bacon as J. Childrey, R. Plot, J. Aubrey and others, although the form given by the first antiquarians was preserved, the temporal characteristics had a completely different place. The authors still set aside separate chapters for antiquities, but described them only as material evidence of the past preserved in the present. And R. Boyle, in his instructions for travelers, completely abandoned the need to record evidence of the past, recommending that the authors focus exclusively on objects of animate and inanimate nature.

Even the authors calling for caution due to the rhetorical features of the text presented the 16 development of science as a progressive process of accumulating truths, often not taking into account the constructive nature of knowledge. The concept of "Scientific Revolution", used as a historical framework in a broad sense, implied a radical transformation of the receptive-representational practices that occurred within the boundaries of 1543 and 1687. Both chronological and territorial boundaries of this concept cannot be clearly defined due to its constructive nature. Because of this, the idea of a gap between knowledge of the past and everything that was before the "Scientific Revolution" appeared. In England at the end of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 17th century, a transformation in the perception of time took place, which went in parallel with the so-called “Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns”, when modern practices of describing reality were declared more relevant than those of the past. This led to the fact that already in the 18th century, the French enlighteners began to talk about the revolution that had taken place in knowledge, and everything that related to the previous time was declared ignorant and barbaric.

One goes back to antiquarianism, in which description is carried out by filling space with images of the past; the second — to Baconianism, which primarily fixes the objects of the physical world. Both traditions describe movement in space in the context of its knowledge. However, often the lack of the opportunity to travel in physical reality forced authors, and especially women, to move their heroes into a “romantic” reality. Such wanderings in fictional worlds can be distinguished in the work of Margaret Cavendish, who paid great attention to the problem of the multiplicity of worlds and overcoming boundaries. A demonstration of the plurality of cultural models is realized in the work of M. Words from the "Russian" language were recorded in the reports of R. Chancellor, C. Adams, D. Hasse and others. The notebooks of J. Tradescant and Richard James serve as examples of texts of the first quarter of the 17th century, the authors of which were busy systematizing and studying individual elements of the Russian space. R. James compiled a dictionary of Russian words with their translation into English and comments of both socio-political and natural science nature. Words from the Russian language were no less valuable for R. James than the rare animals caught and sent by Tradescant to England, and his dictionary demonstrates the existing in the beginning. 17th century connection between learning a language and understanding the world.

The author considers the role of images of the past in the descriptive strategies of eighteenth-century travellers. Referring to extensive material, the article traces the evolution of elements of space recorded by various authors, from itineraria (Ignatius Smolnyanin, Afanasy Nikitina, Trifon Korobeinikov, etc.) to fiction travelogues (A. F. Veltman, O. I. Senkovsky, V. A. Sologub, etc.). The author concludes that texts from the late eighteenth – first half of the nineteenth centuries reflect the loss of Christian values and the “crisis of objectivity”. One of the consequences was the crisis of travelographic descriptions and the fragmentation of images of reality, which is stated by members of the Baden school of Neo-Kantianism, who use the concept of “values” to create new research guidelines.

A new market emerged, designed to provide parents with everything necessary for the upbringing and education of their children. One of the indicative phenomena of the era are educational board games, which helped the child to learn about the history of England, European and world geography, arithmetic, botany, etc. At the same time, a necessary element of learning was the development of virtue and instilling morality. There were both individual didactic games that demonstrated the influence of ethical norms on a person’s destiny and hidden techniques in games that fostered modesty, honesty, openness, etc. The article considers the heuristic potential of such a type of historical source as educational board games and suggests ways for their further study.

Based on extensive cartographic and travelographic material, the transformations that occurred in the perception of space during the New Age are traced. The use of an interdisciplinary approach and the inclusion of developments in the research apparatus from the field of history of science, metageography and metalinguistics made it possible to formulate an original concept for the development of receptive-representative strategies in an era of change, when natural scientific and socio-political categories of space were closely intertwined with each other.

It is the time of the first trade and diplomatic visits as well as the first reports and notes about Russia. In addition to business reports, European travelers publish fiction travelogues, upon which the image of Russia is also being constructed. Maps supplement the image of the Moscow kingdom with a visual range – images of flora and fauna. The article discusses the main motives found in travelogues, and gives an overview of the representative strategies used by the authors in describing the space. At that time, stable descriptive models and stereotypes were just being formed, and their analysis allows us to understand the techniques of interaction between England and Russia over the next centuries.
