An Itinerary is a concept map that serves as a guide for students on how to study or learn a particular topic. By its concept map structure, the Itinerary provides alternatives for the learner to choose how to proceed through the activities provided. An Itinerary doesn’t describe the topic, it recommends how the topic can be studied, and is therefore different from a traditional descriptive concept map. Itineraries provide a level of abstraction that is more manageable by Instructors when organizing online courses than Learning Object and their repositories, and provide inherently the experience of the Instructors that create them, facilitating reusability. Itineraries were used as the mean to organize and present content for Cmappers.Learn, a site open for anybody interested in learning about concept mapping and its uses. 1

Information visualization has been a research topic for many years, leading to a mature field where guidelines and practices are well established. Knowledge visualization, in contrast, is a relatively new area of research that has received more attention recently due to the interest from the business com-munity in Knowledge Management. In this paper we present the CmapTools software as an example of how concept maps, a knowledge visualization tool, can be combined with recent technology to provide integration between knowl-edge and information visualizations. We show how concept map-based knowl-edge models can be used to organize repositories of information in a way that makes them easily browsable, and how concept maps can improve searching algorithms for the Web. We also report on how information can be used to complement knowledge models and, based on the searching algorithms, im-prove the process of constructing concept maps. 1 Introduction: Information and Knowledge V...

The CmapTools program, and concept mapping in general, have seen a steady growth in usage in the last few years. With new users come new requirements and needs for the software that we can’t always satisfy. Until now, the CmapTools architecture has been relatively closed to third party developers. In this paper we report on a new open architecture, KE (Knowledge Exchange Architecture), that provides the data and procedural framework to allow third party developers to design programs that interact with the CmapTools suite of programs. KEA consists of a portable, standard file format for data exchange (CXL), and a set of protocols for retrieving, storing, and manipulating Cmap information. We also describe how KEA was implemented and provide three sample client-server applications illustrating the steps we have taken toward the completion of this implementation. 1
