Since 2016, more than 80 AI ethics documents – including codes, principles, frameworks, and polic... more Since 2016, more than 80 AI ethics documents – including codes, principles, frameworks, and policy strategies – have been produced by corporations, governments, and NGOs. In this paper, we examine three topics of importance related to our ongoing empirical study of ethics and policy issues in these emerging documents. First, we review possible challenges associated with the relative homogeneity of the documents’ creators. Second, we provide a novel typology of motivations to characterize both obvious and less obvious goals of the documents. Third, we discuss the varied impacts these documents may have on the AI governance landscape, including what factors are relevant to assessing whether a given document is likely to be successful in achieving its goals.
:In this article, we present an educational intervention that embeds ethics education within rese... more :In this article, we present an educational intervention that embeds ethics education within research laboratories. This structure is designed to assist students in addressing ethical challenges in a more informed way, and to improve the overall ethical culture of research environments. The project seeks (a) to identify factors that students and researchers consider relevant to ethical conduct in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and (b) to promote the cultivation of an ethical culture in experimental laboratories by integrating research stakeholders in a bottom-up approach to developing context-specific, ethics-based guidelines. An important assumption behind this approach is that direct involvement in the process of developing laboratory specific ethical guidelines will positively influence researchers’ understanding of ethical research and practice issues, their handling of these issues, and the promotion of an ethical culture in the respective laboratory. The active involvement may increase the sense of ownership and integration of further discussion on these important topics. Based on the project experiences, the project team seeks to develop a module involving the bottom-up building of codes-of-ethics-based guidelines that can be used by a broad range of institutions and that will be distributed widely.

We also look at these indications of action in light of the number of reports, articles, and general agitation about the need to take some sort of proactive steps, to see if these reports have influenced the level of action in this area. However, after 2008, you begin to see a number of indications that a growing number of government agencies, international organizations, industrial organizations, and advocacy-oriented NGO’s are developing normative materials and funding projects that can be seen as some of the first steps taken towards promoting the responsible development of nanotechnologies. This paper focuses on the development of normative materials from 2004-2008, and then briefly summarizes how these normative materials helped shape the focus of responsible development after this period.
